Peter King’s Mock Draft: Expect Weirdness

6. CLEVELAND (from N.Y. Jets)

Browns trade 12th, 33rd and 181st picks for No. 6 overall.
Mitchell Trubisky, QB, North Carolina
Could divide the building, but owner hired DePodesta to make ballsy calls like this.

"ballsy", huh? Good thing DePodesta isn't a "pussy".

If only those cheerleaders who giggled at his funny haircut and awkward demeanor in 1973 could see him now!

4. I think John Elway’s new contract, which he said he expects to get done before Week 1, could break the bank for executive deals. (Though we’ll never know, because executive contract details are not released by teams.) The argument could be made that Elway is the most valuable executive in the NFL. No one in the NFL possesses the cache of a Hall of Fame quarterback who returned to his old team to build a Super Bowl champion and consistent winner.
Original emphasis carried over from article.

I don't know. Maybe a Hall of Fame (as soon as he's eligible) coach (definitively in the discussion as one of the greatest of all time) with 7 rings to his name that happens to head up the personnel side too is slightly more valuable and might have similar if not better cachet (right word use), but I'm just spitballing here.

edit - damnit... I got caught by the MMQB trick... this is Klemko

As noted in Woody Allen's "Radio Days," the argument could be made that the Atlantic is bigger than the Pacific. It would be a stupid argument, but there it is.

They were arguing over which ocean is better, which is why it's funny. Nobody ever thinks of the oceans' subjective quality, much less gets angry over it. It's like getting into a heated argument over why right is better than left.

Elway being the most valuable executive (meaning non-coach) is actually not really debatable; he is. Who is better? Maybe Ozzie Newsome? Coaches who also run the personnel side are substantively different from personnel guys who don't coach.

For some players, playing for the GOAT COACH would be at the top of their list. For others, playing for a GOAT QB (from a bygone era), who has built a SB winner as an executive has a different appeal. There are definitely players who want nothing to do with Belichick's ways & means.

Making an assertion without rationale in a thread dedicated to mocking Peter King for doing the same is the definition of living dangerously.

Elway has a good start to his career. Let's see him sustain it before anointing him the most valuable.

Selective editing can make anything look like an assertion without rationale. Perhaps you can read and quote the whole thought next time?

If you have a rebuttal to the point that Elway is 1.) a proto-GOAT QB with a huge reputation as a winner, and golden boy, as an NFL Hall of Famer, 2.) a Super Bowl winning executive, and 3.) there are few other non-coach candidates for best executive, I'd love to debate it.

Maybe a veteran among us could chime in here on his "sending his best."

Sending my best on this Memorial Day to those who have sacrificed so much for our country. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
http://mmqb.si.com/mmqb/2017/05/29/nfl-memorial-day-notes-peter-king-richard-sherman-seahawks

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces.
Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.

Fifteen minutes of fireworks, in sync to the soundtrack of songs from “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” on the 50th anniversary of that album. Two older women next to us singing “Penny Lane.”
Penny Lane is on a different album. Weird.

What's wrong with 'sending his best'? And what the fuck with that bullshit Wiki quote? Who cares? There's two days, plus all the rest. There's no right and wrong when it comes to memorialising those who fought in war, whether they died or not. The idea that you can't provide a level of remembrance to soldiers who are alive is brutally tone deaf. While Peter King is ham fisted, it's much much much less wrong than someone who would go around informing people they're jerks for saying nice things to people who served but didn't die.

If you want to get to the entire issue of the the de-evolution in the United States of every single issue towards patriotic jingoism that's a separate topic but not one relevant to Peter King. He's exactly where he's always been, right in the middle of the main stream, blandly swimming along with everyone else. He's a fool and a moron but on this, your outrage reflects more badly on yourself.

… but these numbers really caught my attention:
2016 Games Average Attendance
New England Patriots 8 66,829
NFL Games in London 3 80,786

Could England do that for eight games a year—sell an average of 13,960 more tickets per game than the Super Bowl champs? I don’t know.
Hmmm, I wonder what could have limited the Patriots attendance? I don't know.

Yeah, obviously stadium size. As percentage of capacity:

New England Patriots 100%
London 98.1%

So the team in Old England will be playing in a newer and larger stadium than the team in New England. Weird.

Not to mention ticket price. What's a game in London cost at face?

Looks like you can get field-level seats for 95 pounds?

While second deck is 25 pounds?

I guarantee the Pats take in a fuckload more revenue with those 18k fewer tickets. I pay $89 a seat for third deck, 10 rows from the back wall.

I guess the answer to the thread title is 'not many people here', since it hasn't been bumped in a month and a half. I just noticed today that the URL mmqb.si.com no longer sits by itself; it now resolves to si.com/nfl. Looks like the Grantland-lite experiment is over...

No... no it's not.

MMQB is now all of SI's NFL coverage. It all runs through them.

OK, it's a nitpicky little thing ... but PK devotes some space this week to the release of the book Paul Zimmerman was putting together before the stroke hit.

Here's the cover

PK has been a supporter of Zimmerman for years. If you never read Dr Z or saw him on TV, you missed something truly authentic. ... But why in the hell does King's name need to be at the top of this book cover? Couldn't that yellow strip be at the bottom, and still stand out enough?

It could--but it's possible the publisher deemed PK to be the bigger sales draw; King may have had little if any input on the decision.

I was just going to echo Dotrat's point that at this point in time Peter King is probably the more well known of the two writers. It has been how long since Zimmerman suffered his stroke? The publisher often makes the call on cover design , name placement, cover graphics etc.. They probably decided King was better draw.
Of a million and two things to get on Peter King for, this is not one of them. Why do people sometimes pick out the most pickeyune thing to get steamed over? Now please excuse me while I run to the bathroon to barf after defending Peter King

Since PK would have seen the seen the cover art before it was published, he could have requested the yellow stripe be moved to the bottom, where his name would still be prominent enough for those unfamiliar with Dr. Z to see it.

This book is meant, in part, as a tribute to Dr Z. It's tacky, at best, to see PK's name above the title

I think it's actually a good thing. Presumably most of the revenue will go to Dr Z and if the prominent display of King's name drives sales then that's more $$ for the ailing Zimmerman.

Think for a moment, who is the audience for this book. First, those who read Dr Z and were fans. Then, people introduced to Dr Z through PK's columns. Finally, those who might be drawn to it seeing King's name with little or no knowledge of Dr. Z.

The prominence of King's name means nothing to the first two groups. And if the third group can't see King's name in a security-tape yellow stripe at the bottom of the cover, they likely can't read anyway.

Based on his writing, I'm not sure that Peter King is a good choice as an editor, but maybe he just picked the pieces to include and someone else does the grunt work of actually editing it. Is there such a thing as a ghost editor?

All I could think reading his column today was "How much does this guy love the smell of his own farts?"

Like 75% of the column waxes poetic about friends of his in the industry, wine, the Red Sox, or other non-on-the-field football topics.

He really barely even writes about what's happening in the game anymore. It's just a bunch of random facts about himself and his football friends. I mean, holy shit was that a bad column this morning; literally all-time horrendous football "coverage." It may go down as one of the worst pieces of football journalism over 1,000 words of all time.

I don't think he even made any mention whatsoever of like half the games played yesterday, yet he spent time writing about how much he loves some shitty wine no matter the vintage. What a dope, and I actually used to like him, overall, as long as he kept his personal anecdotes to a minimum. Now they're completely overtaking the column.

9. I think it’s hard to imagine a city having the sports day Houston had Sunday (and into this morning). From the opening kickoff of Seattle 41, Houston 38 in Seattle Sunday afternoon to Alex Bregman singling home the winning run in Astros 13, Dodgers 12, 9 hours and 34 minutes elapsed … with only 58 minutes between games. That means greater Houston was pulsating with two of the most scintillating sports events in the history of the city. Amazing.
This isn't placed her to be a knock on PK, but I'm trying to remember the circumstance a few years back involving Boston teams. Was it the Papi Slame against Detroit and a Pats win?

Papi grand slam was the same night as a Pats vs Saints game which ended with a last-second TD throw from Brady to Thompkins. It was the Sunday before Columbus Day in 2013.
