The Miami Marlins will honor victims of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School by wearing the school's caps before their Grapefruit League opener Friday.

The Marlins will wear the caps during their workout and pregame before they face the St. Louis Cardinals in Jupiter, Florida. Miami is unlikely to be able to wear them for the game, due to Major League Baseball rules.

I can see if this were a regular-season game that some sort of protocol would be breached; but what would be the harm in letting the Marlins wear the caps for an exhibition game?

Pay the fine? Haven't you heard, Miami is broke - Jeter will likely have to sell off another valuable piece for pennies on the dollar just to come up with fine money....

Not sure exactly where to post this but the No. 1 pitching prospect (and No. 8 overall) Forrest Whitley (in Houston's orginzation) has been suspended 50 games for violating the MiL drug program.

Rays have started a program this spring to rotate their analytics staff into uniform to shadow on field coaches in training sessions and in the dugout during games. Some guy named J-Money with a math degree from Princeton has been hanging out next to Cash in the dugout for the spring games so far. The extra 2%!! Apparently they decided against giving them special uniform pants with cargo short pockets, though.

Ronald Acuna is tearing up Spring Training. I feel like the MLBPA has to, at the very least, make the service time manipulation bs impossible in their next agreement. A lot of guys spending time in the minors to juke their FA date, and then they are "too old" once they actually are trying to get paid.

Regardless, NL East might be an interesting division for a change the next few years, especially if Harper goes back to the Nats and Robles breaks out.

The loophole about spending one month in AAA so the team gets an extra year may (emphasis on may) be negotiated away in the next round. Have no idea why the MLBPA did not push for this on the latest CBA (maybe they did but gave up at the end). But this only adds a year to a player we know is headed to the big show (like Kris Bryant). However, if a team holds a player in AAA for a whole year when it knows he's ready, there is nothing anyone can do about that.

They could change the rule so that teams only have the rights to a player for a certain number of years after they're initiially drafted or signed (different numbers depending on whether you're an international signee, a HS draft pick or a college draft pick), no matter whether you're still in the minors or not.

I thonk something like that exists via the option system. That's where the whole 40 man roster crunch comes in and some players are exposed to the Rule 5 Draft.

But back on topic, how many years could a team realistically keep a prospect like Kris Bryant, Mike Trout, or even Arod down in AAA when they know he could help the big club?

I do agree, that the whole 6 years of control must change, that will be the major point of contention when the next CBA is negitiated methinks. Of course, from now until 2021 who knows what may happen? Also, (as seen in another thread) players in the minors will continue to get the shaft.

Right, but that's different from big league service time. Under what I'm proposing, a team would only have the rights to each player through a certain date, so there would be no reason to try to mess with their service time to keep control of them longer. This also will become relevant if more teams start doing what TB is planning this year, using a four man rotation and shuttling guys up and down to cover innings. Under the current rules, this will allow them to control those players longer, but under what I'm proposing, it would make the decision to do that solely a baseball decision.

Bumgarner hit by a line drive in his pitching hand today in his last tuneup before Opening Day, fractured hand. Oof.

Is it me or did the Angels mess up Ohtani letting him only pitch 2 2/3 MLB IP and get 28 AB?

Offensively he should have had twice the number of AB seeing as he has a huge adjustment and most hitters say they need 50 ST AB

I cant see how he has any confidence at all going into the season. I cant see Scoscia having any confidence in him. I cant see him adjusting to hitting MLB pitching hitting twice a week. I dont get what they are doing.

At this point he should be sent down. But they may have a handshake agreement not to which makes his lack of work in ST even more hard to fathom

The Astros will use a four man outfield at times.

https://theathletic.com/289324/2018/03/26/after-spring-experimenting-the-astros-are-prepared-to-use-a-four-man-outfield-shift-in-the-regular-season/

When Nick Cafardo hears about this in late May he'll be pretty, pretty upset.
Video of it here. Very cool. An extension of the “standard” shift and would seem to be a countermeasure against the new school of flyball focused hitting.
