I hope his next homer he moonwalks around the bases.
I don’t give two shits how he gets around the bases, in fact the next time he homers against the Marlins he should make a Big Papi trot look downright Billy Hamiltonesque. I just find it funny that one of the former self appointed arbiters of “how to play the game the right way” was noted Braves douchebag Brian Mccann.

No it won’t. The union would file a grievance and win because a 40, or even 20 game suspension would far exceed anything given out for this. It would need to be part of the next CBA to make harsher penalties for this nonsense.
Let them fight it. Who cares? Get the ball rolling so this shit disappears.

Did we want Pedro suspended when he did this?

Anyway, someone, Olney maybe, said he wondered how pitchers would like it if next time someone is tossing a no no in the 8th, if the hitter just suddenly charged the mound and swung his bat into pitchers arm, just to, you know, get him off his game.

I don't recall Pedro blatantly throwing at a guy on the first pitch of a game like that. He pitched inside unapologetically and he hit some guys unapologetically, but did he ever go after a guy with such intent just because the guy was in a zone? Because he had taken other pitchers (some on other teams) deep?

I love Pedro, but if he'd pulled the shit Urena did the other night, I don't think I could defend him and would not be upset if he was suspended for doing it.

Pedro's drilling people is literally the one thing I dislike about the God-King, Lord of Lords, Pedro Fucking Martinez.

Buchholz last seven starts: 4-1, 2.11 ERA, 1.16 WHIP. And he’s looking good so far tonight in SD.

If Arizona makes the playoffs he’s probably their No.3 behind Greinke and Corbin.

Remember when Pedro knocked Matsui on his ass in game 5?

I have nothing else to contribute, really, I just like thinking about that.

Buchholz pitched a complete game 5-1 victory tonight. Lovullo left him in even though he was getting touched up a bit in the ninth and he finished at 112 pitches. Pads had a solo homer in the 8th, rest of the game they got squat. Based on this game, and the way he’s been going, I’d like to have him back. But it ain’t happening.

The Mets just tacked on another run in the top of the 9th to pad their lead to 23-4 over the Phillies. Game 2 of that doubleheader is scheduled to start in about 30 minutes. That's gotta feel absolutely brutal for both teams.

What happens in this situation? They'd pretty much have to delay the second game, right?
Second game of single admission doubleheaders have ALWAYS started 20-40 minutes after the first game. The "7:05PM" you may have seen listed is just an estimate

After 112 pitches, his arm is probably going to fall off in his next start.

Threw up and in at Einar Diaz's face, he'd doubled off him at least once earlier in the game going the other way off the outside corner.

Overturn was correct. In the view where you can see when the tag hits, the catcher’s foot is moving by that time. From the other angle, the foot moves from the hand hitting the plate (and the foot).

Houston brings in a lefty for Olson.... hanging curve down & in.... ballgame.

I'd like to see a conclusive angle released by MLB, because I did not see it

Lovely. Perfect scenario:
A's take the west
Stros burn Verlander to beat the MFY
I'm at Fenway to help traumatize Osuna in games 1 and 2
Cleve and Oak wear out everyone's arm in the DS

As a baseball fan, the A's are an awesome story and they are really impressive. As a Sox fan, they are a bit scary.

Edwin Diaz finally blows a save on a blast by Max Muncy, but the Dodgers give it back in the 10th on a walkoff balk.

We have some pretty serious baseball fans here, maybe leaving out people actively playing fantasy baseball, if I said the last four pitchers for the Dodgers tonight in a close game in a tight pennant race in late August were Alexander, Chargois, Ferguson and Floro, how many first names could you come up with there? I'd get none except I watched the last few innings tonight, how do they not have more backup behind Jansen in their bullpen?

[H]ow do they not have more backup behind Jansen in their bullpen?
Scott (from Royals offseason rumors, personally thought he'd be a solid LHP piece given peripherals), JT (memorable name), had to look up Caleb, Dylan (part of the Reds/Neal deal) last month. It's a stupid human trick for sure, but: If you are traded, and I was actively watching baseball, I will remember your name. :)

As to the meat of the question, it's more than Jansen. There's only so many bullets your gun can have, you know? Koehler and his season-ending injury hurt a bit a month ago, 3.22 FIP. Goeddel, a solid bridge guy, just got hurt with elbow inflammation, the other day. Josh Fields, their setup man with a 170 ERA+, has been out most of this month with shoulder inflammation. Cingrani with his ERA-FIP differential of 2.66 (in his favor) is currently on the 60-day DL, probably back next month.

Considering not just the quantity, but quality of these arms alone, I think any bullpen would be in shambles. A touch under the radar, Zaidi giving up on Wilmer Font for only Logan Salow (ditto Oakland) was a bad choice. Notably, he was a breakout star of my favorite prospect projection system, Mitchell's KATOH. Sullivan at Fangraphs did a solid piece on him prior to the season, noting him as one of 2 AAA pitchers in 2017 to have a 30% K rate (Glasnow), comping his results to Tampa's Brent Honeywell (on the note of injuries, Honeywell got TJS this season).

Oh, wow, I didn’t realize about all those other guys being out, that makes a lot more sense, thanks.

I think also they still would have probably gone after veteran reinforcements at the deadline but like NY, they are set on staying under the $197M line and resetting their tax rate.

Braves swept in a 4 gamer by Colorado, at home. that's pretty damaging in the NL East race.

Meanwhile the Nats are going to lose a series to the Marlins and dip below .500 again. They really should move Harper for as much as they can get at this point.

Verlander has given up two bombs in the first inning. the Astros are REELING right now.

Sadly, Harper must clear waivers, and only if he does can the Nats deal him.

So this means they cannot get as much as they can get

It means they cannot get as much as they could have before the trade deadline. It doesn’t mean they can’t get anything.

meanwhile, the Astros hit like 5 bombs and salvaged the series. Khris Davis is up to 35 blasts though - HR crown is pretty crowded.

Yu Darvish's rehab assignment lasted one inning, and he's likely finished for the year... granted, they never got much of anything from him this season anyway. The Cubs also put Mike Montgomery on the DL last week with shoulder inflammation. He claims he'll soon be fine, but... the Cubs rotation currently features Jon Lester as their only starter with a sub-4.00 ERA. That's not exactly what you expect to see from the team with the best record in the National League. September should be fun in the NL, and I'm not sure anyone is going to come out of it feeling good about their World Series aspirations.

Although Hamels does have a 0.72 ERA in his four starts with the Cubs.

But I do agree that the NL is going to be a blast. The NL Wild Card is crazy.

Nice touch putting a team that plays like a Little League team in this game.
FWIW, the laughable Mets might be playing the best of any NL East team the last ten days, 7-4 in their last 11 games with 83 runs scored before tonight’s 6-0 lead.

I can't believe the only way to watch the Oakland game is through Facebook. I don't want anything to do with it. Was looking forward to a little rest from tomato processing, but no. Don't their own fans get to watch on their home stations? Why are those not on mlb.tv per usual? Does Facebook pay mlb in order to get people to open new accounts?

Kenley Jansen of the Dodgers has given up 3 home runs in an inning and a third since coming off the DL. Previous 48 innings he gave up three.

Dodgers have been tied in the 9th Inning of 8 of their last 11 games. Lost all 8.
Whoa, great factoid. Jansen has looked much more mortal all year but these three HRs have been bombs. LAD fans have to be scared, maybe they can play an October series against the Nats for 11th place.

Very curious how much Houston can turn things around now that Altuve is back. He missed 21 games and HOU went 8-13, they are 69-37 with him in there including a 10-7 win over SEA today. HOU hasn't had Springer/Altuve/Correa in the lineup together since late June.
