Red Sox, Ceddanne Rafaela agree to contract extension

Ceddanne sitting at a HH% of 30%, a BABIP of .267, and a K rate of 27%. HH% is bottom 20th percentile, K rate is 24th percentile, and of course the BB% is bottom 3rd percentile. A lot to improve on there. But the K rate, whil, uh, really bad, is an improvement over last year's 31%, and much...

Chris Sale (plus $17mil) traded to Atlanta for Vaughn Grissom

Sale has been great. It's a major bummer watching him mow us down, but I'm hoping Grissom will make us forget about him soon enough. The guy has done nothing but hit year-in, year-out, and it would really be nice to finally have someone who can solidify the position on offense if not on defense...

5/8: Sale Day takes on a new meaning

I mean I know it's fun to blame the Red Sox players, but give Sale some credit. There's not very many left-hand hitters that have any idea where his slider is going. Everybody swings at his shit out of the zone because most guys can't even tell if it's a slider or a fastball until it's too late.

5/8: Sale Day takes on a new meaning

Just my intuition but it seems like Sale has gotten some favorable calls at very favorable times.

5/8: Sale Day takes on a new meaning

Wilyer hasn't shown the ability to lay off sliders away so far this year. Might be an ugly night for him

2024 Lineup (What we actually have - no trade speculation.)

This is great, thank you. Yeah, Dalbec unfortunately seems to me more likely to follow the Middlebrooks track. I thought maybe he'd be like Carlos Pena, but then I looked at Pena's actual K numbers, and the guy was mostly around 27%. Which is not great, but you can survive. 35% plus K rate and...

May: Red Sox discussion, observations and trend tracking...AKA It's not all about the Benjamins

Last night's LOB-fest was frustrating for sure. On the other hand, Devers is posting the best wrc+ of his career so far, and boasting a walk rate of 15%, which has led to an OBP over .400. I'm not going to make too much of that either, but the guy has always hit. I'm more confident that the BB...

2024 Lineup (What we actually have - no trade speculation.)

Sure, I'll do the research for you. According to this analysis of the data, yeah, good point. But I'd note a few things: that Smith had the surgery in the offseason, early January -- so nearly half a year ago -- and had Spring Training (where he hit pretty well) and some minor league time...

2024 Lineup (What we actually have - no trade speculation.)

Totally agree, but I think there's some reason for optimism with the two guys we;ve got. Cooper and Smith haven't been great, and I don't expect them to be really. But they're not striking out 50% of the time and it's very, very early to be making a judgment call on either of them, I think. 20...

    5/3 - Grissom finally debuts

Didn't know Dominic Smith had been dealing with teniditis in his wrist for years before the hamate broke in January. Might explain how far his HH%'s have fallen.

    Yoshida to IL

Yeah, it's an open question how long the injuries will continue, though. You can't be sure they'll continue, I mean. It's possible that there's more, but besides Story and Giolito, no one is projected to be out for the year. Cooper is back in the lineup today, Grissom is due back Friday...

Is Connor Wong a starting catcher?

Under the hood a little for those who like Savant. Obviously not great exit velocities or HH%'s (that's not new), but when the guy has hit the ball hard this year, he makes it count. Defense is as others have noted. Terrible at blocking pitches, and I'm sure the CS will go up. 1st...
