Still Not the Super League: Champions League 23/24

It would be pretty funny for Dortmund to win the Champions League final against Bayern after years of ineptitude. That being said, we get two Der Klassickers every year and I generally want to see clubs from different countries facing off (that’s the point of European competition, isn’t it??)...

    The Special Ones (manager talk)

I’ve always been a big Lopetegui fan, thought he was tremendous at Sevilla and for Spain, but it definitely seems like a portion of the West Ham faithful have been pushing for Moyes out. I still want Lope instead of GGG for the USMNT but that ship has sailed.

Return of the Galácticos? Spanish Fútbol 23-24

Answer to my question: The last time another Catalan team finished ahead of Barcelona was 1941-1942 (Espanyol). Oviedo also finished ahead Barca, as did Granada, Depor, and Castellón. Atlético Madrid were still Atletico Aviación and Athletic Club were Atletico Bilbao, both Franco era naming...

Return of the Galácticos? Spanish Fútbol 23-24

Congrats to Real Madrid who won La Liga while undoubtedly sealing the fate of Cadiz. This coupled with Barcelona’s loss to Girona gave Madrid the title. When is the last time a Catalan club finished above Barca? My best guess is 1932-1933. The top 4 and relegation spots are pretty much set. Not...

Sane had a great chance early on but couldn’t convert. Would’ve started this one off with a bang.

The Ugly Side of the Beautiful Game

I posted this in the Spanish thread but fits better here. ICYMI, a fan at the Atletico Madrid- Athletic Club made monkey chants at Nico Williams (who later scored, ran over to that section of the crowd, and pointed to his skin). Protocol was followed: the game was stopped, an announcement was...

Return of the Galácticos? Spanish Fútbol 23-24

Then I go on Twitter/X. I’m shocked in a good way at La Liga. So rarely do they do anything of consequence in a positive way. View: https://twitter.com/laligamichael/status/1785362075822260282?s=46&t=XvGOrrWIyL-5CHVVL_0JYQ The Competitions Committee have decided to partially close the...

Return of the Galácticos? Spanish Fútbol 23-24

Finally have some time to reflect after a painful Seville derby. Betis were the better team and should have won, but it ended 1-1. Sigh. From a USMNT perspective, Johnny was fantastic once again, and at one point he, Isco, and Ayoze went full Harlem Globetrotters on the sideline that got the...

    Global Football Odds & Ends

Again, they “broke the bank” last summer with Bellingham (and Guler etc) but still spent less than half of the teams in the Prem. The year before they spent less than 20 teams in the Premier League. I don’t like defending Real Madrid and their finances. They can spend far more than the rest of...
