2024 Lineup (What we actually have - no trade speculation.)

Dalbec got sent down yesterday after the game so presumably that's how they're getting Grissom on the roster. Short is the Pablo Reyes replacement, ultimately. Hamilton is effectively the 6th middle infielder and outfielder (by allowing Rafaela to move out there if necessary).

    Red Sox acquire Zack Short

So Short starts at 2B today and presumably Grissom is activated tomorrow (for Dalbec or Hamilton) to be the regular starter moving forward?

    Red Sox sign Dominic Smith

Right, but they need a Yoshida replacement too. Once Grissom and Short are activated, the regular 8 position players are going to be Wong, Cooper, Grissom, Rafaela, Devers, O'Neill, Duran, and Abreu. That leaves McGuire, Smith, Short, Refsnyder and ??? to fill the bench and DH slot. My...

    Red Sox sign Dominic Smith

I don't disagree. I'm just looking at the three optionable candidates (Valdez, Dalbec, and Hamilton) and trying to guess which one of them is more likely to turn it around at the plate in the short term (getting better luck, fewer significant adjustments), and went with the guy who's currently...

    Red Sox sign Dominic Smith

He'd have to be to have played last night like he did. (he was added when they DFA'd Reyes) Presumably by the end of this series if not the end of the week, Short, Smith and Grissom will be on the active roster and Yoshida, Hamilton and Dalbec will be gone. I think Valdez might stick on the...

    Red Sox sign Dominic Smith

Bottom of the barrel is kinda where you have to shop when you're looking for short term solutions to short term problems and don't want to screw up future considerations. These guys are being signed so they can be cut easily and painlessly when other guys (Casas, Grissom, Gonzalez, Yoshida...

Wave of mutilation: The latest injuries

He did have a stint on the IL in 2021 toward the end of the season so clearly he can't stand up to the rigors of relieving either. We don't "definitely know" he can't stay healthy as a starter. Correlation is not causation. Unless we have evidence that his injuries are directly related to...

March/April: Red Sox discussion, observations and trend tracking...AKA It's not all about the Benjamins

I'm not sure I understand the significance here. In those 6 shutouts, they've scored 41 runs (nearly 7 runs per game). It's not like they're winning 1-0 each time (just once). Overall, they're averaging 4.77 runs per game (10th in MLB). It's kinda crazy to think what they could be doing if...

Beat the Giants today Avril 30

Options don't go away and he's never been optioned. A player with his service time has to agree to be optioned though, which is perhaps the most surprising thing. He's willingly going to the minors.

    2024 Rotation and Bullpen

Before he was with the White Sox, he was with...the Cubs. Breslow is very familiar with him.

Wave of mutilation: The latest injuries

If Yoshida needs the IL, it would make sense for him to be the corresponding move when they finally activate Grissom.

Yoshida banged up. Left Sunday's game after jamming his wrist on a swing.

Only if a single followed by a CS is scored as an non-hit.

Sox to trade for Garrett Cooper, Pablo Reyes DFA’d

I don't imagine Dalbec is getting DFA'd this season. Since he can be optioned, it makes sense to continue to stash him in Worcester if/when he's no longer needed on the big club. At the end of the season, I can definitely see him being a DFA candidate though. They're going to have to get the...

March/April: Red Sox discussion, observations and trend tracking...AKA It's not all about the Benjamins

A runs allowed per game of 3.66 is only sad in the context of a 2.68 ERA. In general, allowing fewer than 4 runs per game is great. Only one team did that last season (Milwaukee at 3.99).

How do you solve a problem like Yoshida?

Devers to DH, Dalbec at 3B, Yoshida on the IL. All kinds of problems solved! ;)

They really need to turn down the ump mic. It's ridiculous.

Ravech also seems to think Houck's last start was 11 days ago. I wouldn't take him at his word.

Beat the Cubs today Avril 28

Cooper wasn't traveling with the team so it's not as though he's in town and sitting out to appease the Cubs.

Beat the Cubs today Avril 28

The "cursebusters" thing is pretty lame too. It's been 8 years since the Cubs broke their "curse" and 20 since the Sox broke theirs. At what point do we move on and just treat these teams just like every other storied franchise in the league?
