    Round 2: Celtics vs Cavs

Incidentally, this is why the people who are saying "c'mon, don't give me this Tatum-shot-badly-but-was-the-key crap; I can see that DWhite and Jaylen went off! If they didn't make those shots, the Cs would have been screwed!" They're basically right, but it sort of misses the point that the...

    Round 2: Celtics vs Cavs

I need to do a long post on this at some point, but the Celtics have a very non-traditional offense that leverages - Tatum being a gameplanning focus for other teams - the threat of Tatum being able to bully guys if you give him the matchup he wants - White, Jaylen, KP, Jrue all being good...

    (2) New York Knicks vs (6) Indiana Pacers - 2024 EC Second Round

The comparison is that both are playing meh teams (Cleveland probably better than bad Halliburton Indy), and the Knicks are getting lionized for barely winning, while everyone acts like Boston winning by less than 50 is a crisis.

Yes, the Cs are extremely well-positioned at the organizational level overall

To take one example, JJ was always all-in on Mazzulla, even right when he became a HC. I think Joe's reputation around the league is much stronger than his reputation on Twitter and this board.

Good team, interesting offensive and defensive schemes, good vibes, and led immediately to a HC job for Lee. Checks the boxes.

I doubt Mazzulla will have trouble now attracting the next top assistant candidates who are available.

Put Your Exasperated Guy Takes Here

You're right, and it's probably just deferring with all the other guards/wings being fully healthy. He's done well in the spacer role, and still pushes the pace and attacks a bit.

    (2) Denver Nuggets vs (3) Minnesota Timberwolves - 2024 WC Second Round

This is why Brad keeps stockpiling premium offensive options. You can lose 1-2 at any given time and still be elite. Most teams are fragile to a star getting hurt or being limited, but Denver is uniquely dependent on Murray being perfectly healthy, which has historically been a bad bet. Good...

    Round 2: Celtics vs Cavs

Speaking as someone who likes discussing Tatum and has done a lot of it in this thread: could we move the Tatum discussion to his thread?

Yes, had been trying to get a head coaching job for awhile. Glad the Cs gig put him over the top.

    (2) New York Knicks vs (6) Indiana Pacers - 2024 EC Second Round

Am I crazy/overreacting, or is TJ better than Halliburton right now?

    (2) New York Knicks vs (6) Indiana Pacers - 2024 EC Second Round

It's up and down, not playoff-ish. Very playground style. A locked-in D like Boston or Minny would make most of this ball movement and shotmaking go away fast.

    Round 2: Celtics vs Cavs

Hmmm...they played PP more than anyone except the starters (24 minutes), and he was +19 even though he started off shooting not-great. I think they love PP's spacing and defensive effort. He really gets up into guys and chases them around, in a way that is reminiscent of TJ McConnell's best...

    Round 2: Celtics vs Cavs

People have repeatedly mentioned that this was just an example of something that happens, and a way to talk about a broader topic, but you seem weirdly averse to that conversation.

    Round 2: Celtics vs Cavs

That's fine in this specific case, but in general, NBA coaches clearly have a universal directive to their guys to stay glued to Tatum off-ball. There's a huge gap between what Twitter thinks of Tatum and what coaches think of him. It's not hard to find tons of clips like this, across lots of...

    Round 2: Celtics vs Cavs

NBA Twitter brains are so warped from heliocentric brain worms that they can't appreciate economy of effort, which trickles down to other areas like defense, rebounding, and off-ball-threateningness. Like, at a certain point people forgot that the point of basketball is to score more points and...

    Round 2: Celtics vs Cavs

Spoelstra has had the most effective version of this strategy over the years, and the Warriors copied it in 2022: go 1:1, and send lots of late help. Tatum solved it against Miami this year, totally wrecked that gameplan, and Spo had to move to plan B. As you said, it is no longer a viable move...
