May: Red Sox discussion, observations and trend tracking...AKA It's not all about the Benjamins

Right. It's cumulative but also comparative.

Re: Abreu - the only issue is whether he can hit lefties. Cora doesn't seem very confident that he can.

Chris Sale (plus $17mil) traded to Atlanta for Vaughn Grissom

Per mlb.com: https://www.mlb.com/glossary/transactions/vesting-option "In most cases, a vesting option that fails to vest can still be exercised as a club option." Of course there has to be a "in most cases" qualifier, but this is the general rule.

The more I think about it the more it blows my mind that the Sox hired Dillon Lawson as a hitting coordinator after the Yankees fired him. The Yankees offense the last few years was one-dimensional, home run or nothing. Swing hard in case you hit it. What exactly did they see in this guy's...

    5/18: HoucKutter v. (don't really care)

But is there any basis for confidence in their ability to do so?

Garrett Whitlock shutdown after soreness in his elbow, back in BOS for testing

It was a very reasonable deal they did with Whitlock. The final two years on it, which would be his first two free agent years, are both team options. I expect they realized it was possible he would end up as a reliever, too. But obviously the first priority was to try him as a starter...

Who to sell at the trade deadline?

If Jansen is traded at the deadline the acquiring team only has to pay 16/3 = 5.33 million.

Who to sell at the trade deadline?

I'm wondering if there is a comparable example of a contract like Yoshida's getting stapled in a deadline trade.

Who to sell at the trade deadline?

I'm not a big Yoshida fan either, but I'd rather see him in the lineup right now than not. At least he can post an OPS+ over 100. We have plenty who can't.

Who to sell at the trade deadline?

I think it probably also reflects a general devaluation of the DH position, which is not favorable to unloading Yoshida.

Or Kutter. Much like the Sox season, this thread is off to an error-plagued start.

Who to sell at the trade deadline?

Yoshida's contract will have $63 million left on it as of the midway point of this season. Who's going to take that on for a DH with an OPS+ of 109? JD Martinez had trouble getting signed at all after posting an OPS+ of 134 last year. The only way you can move Yoshida is by eating a huge...

I don't see how you can assess Cora's managerial record without mentioning the near-miracle of 2021.

May: Red Sox discussion, observations and trend tracking...AKA It's not all about the Benjamins

I found it a bit curious that the Red Sox hired Dillon Lawson as a hitting coordinator after he was fired by the Yankees mid-season. Lawson's stated hitting philosophy is "Hit Strikes Hard".

May: Red Sox discussion, observations and trend tracking...AKA It's not all about the Benjamins

The template has worked in a lot of games though. Jansen has become iffy, of course. This team just ends up in too many close games that are decided at the end. Almost every game is a struggle. As for Slaten, he's one of those guys you have to be careful not to burn out with too many...

May: Red Sox discussion, observations and trend tracking...AKA It's not all about the Benjamins

I disagree that Cora is the issue. Our offense has been depleted by injury and we just have too many guys that can't even muster a .600 OPS., in some cases not .500, in some not .400...

May: Red Sox discussion, observations and trend tracking...AKA It's not all about the Benjamins

If someone told you before the season the Sox would be at .500 after 44 games you wouldn't be shocked. If someone told you they'd be at .500 after 44 games with a 2.79 ERA, you'd have some very colorful replies.

But tied for 15th with 4 other teams in OPS+ with 98. So they're only ahead of 11 teams in OPS+. It's the numbers since Casas's injury that would be frightening to behold.

Chris Sale (plus $17mil) traded to Atlanta for Vaughn Grissom

It should be noted that there was a vesting option in Sale's contract with the Red Sox for 2025. He had to finish in the 2024 AL Cy Young voting top 10 and not be on the IL at the end of the season. Somebody said that since it was a team option the Red Sox could exercise it even if it didn't...
