Western Conference Finals: Minnesota Timberwolves (3) vs Dallas Mavericks (5)

Kyrie has to own part of the debacle in Brooklyn too, though there’s plenty of blame to around for that, and his isn’t the biggest piece. But I agree with your broader point. Kyrie is a good 2nd option when he’s focused and on a team with a ball-dominant top-dog. He was unfocused in Boston and...

Jayson Tatum's Rise to the Top

KG was possibly the best defensive player in the history of the league. (Seriously, I think it’s between him and Russell, and the game was so different back in the ‘60s.) That’s why I rate him above Tatum, even though Tatum is the better offensive player by a wide margin. The game has changed...

Jayson Tatum's Rise to the Top

I don’t think anyone claimed there were 15 guys they’d take over LeBron in the playoffs. I think a lot of us felt the 2nd-best player on an average-ish team shouldn’t be on an all-NBA team. But that’s not really a shocking take — LeBron is 11 years removed from his last MVP award, so...

Jayson Tatum's Rise to the Top

Yes. KG was the best player in the league from 2004-08 or so (basically, from when Shaq’s prime ended to when LeBron’s began), but with defensive analytics in their infancy he never got proper credit. It didn’t help that Duncan had one of the best supporting casts ever and Kobe played for the...

    RIP Bill Walton

Walton’s career wouldn’t be HOF-worthy in baseball, but it would be in football — think Terrell Davis or Earl Campbell. (The bar for Springfield is low enough that it’s not a serious question; winning the MVP basically punches your ticket, though Derrick Rose might change that.)

How Do You Want The WCF to End?

This is where my son is at. He thinks that so long as the series doesn’t go 7, the Mavs will get plenty of rest, so he’d rather keep the rust equal. I’m rooting for Minnesota. If they win tonight, they’ll probably win Game 5 at home too. Dallas will still get a nice rest if they close out in...

How would Major League Baseball on Apple TV plus presented by Chevrolet make money without subscription fees?

Goodbye Gruden and ongoing Snyder investigation discussion

The Nevada Supreme Court has ruled that Gruden’s lawsuit against the NFL must be resolved in arbitration. That’s a loss for Gruden, who would have preferred to press his case in a public forum (or, perhaps, he thought the specter of a public trial might allow him to negotiate a more favorable...

    5/13 - G4 @ CLE - Didn't Come to Cleveland for the Weather

Exactly. The problem isn’t that they won a close game; it’s that the game was close despite Cleveland missing their best player, not playing terribly well, and probably getting the short end of an uneven officiating performance. C’s were lucky tonight more than they were good.

    5/13 - G4 @ CLE - Didn't Come to Cleveland for the Weather

The offense was fine. The goal was to run 24 seconds off the clock; the quality of shot he ended up getting was secondary. The foul, on the other hand, was inexcusable.

    5/13 - G4 @ CLE - Didn't Come to Cleveland for the Weather

Seemed like a textbook example of a call that might be made in the 3rd quarter of a game in January but is never called in the last 2 minutes of a playoff game.

    That’s either a no-call or a foul on Jaylen.

    5/13 - G4 @ CLE - Didn't Come to Cleveland for the Weather

Not counting unhatched chickens, but it looks like we’re going to get a road win where only two guys (Tatum and Holiday) played well.

Very lucky he wasn’t hurt. He’s playing badly tonight.

    Plummeting Ticket Prices

MLB attendance peaked in 2007. There are obviously reasons specific to the Red Sox why demand for tickets at Fenway is down now, but demand would be down from 15-20 years ago even if ownership and the front office had done everything right.

    5/11 - G3 @ CLE - Scott Wedman: Hero of Watertown

C’s got more easy buckets than the Cavs. CJM and his staff deserve a lot of credit for that. I think that was the difference on a night when Mitchell was probably the best player on the floor (32 points on 22 shots, 0 turnovers).
