The Dolphins had the biggest rise in attendance in the NFL this season, jumping from 29th to 21st this year. If Ireland's fired, they could move up at least another half-dozen spots in 2014.

Reportedly Ireland declined to cede more power to Aponte--her as GM a clever way to leapfrog your way to being a "progressive" organization? Was interface at NFL between NFPLA and owners.

The belief that owner Stephen Ross would keep his coach for at least the next season, regardless of who was hired as GM, was bolstered Wednesday by CEO Tom Garfinkel.
"Steve has a lot of confidence in Joe. Joe's our head coach -- a lot of confidence in Joe Philbin," Garfinkel responded when asked if the new GM would be able to select his or her own coach, per The Palm Beach Post.
Garfinkel said the Dolphins plan to "move fast" in selecting their next general manager ...
"In my conversations with (Ross, we're looking for) someone with a proven track record of evaluating talent -- a football person," said Garfinkel, per the Miami Herald. "That's going to be the first criteria. Someone with a lot of intellect. A collaborative team player. Someone whoâs creative and open-minded."
Red PR said:I find Steve Ross as the main culprit of how Miami is performing and has performed last 5 years. When he took over as owner I was not thrilled and to this day I am correct about that. I think he means the best in wanting to win and will spend to do it but he is not and has not handled well choosing the right GM/Coach combination (as well as a few other decisions) in any of his years as owner. The beginning of this off-season has saved Philbin for now and as Dave Hyde writes in his article, good chance another shotgun wedding Coach/Gm looms.
Well, that didn’t take long.
Within minutes of posting a story about the Miami Herald report that the Dolphins had contacted Ravens assistant General Manager Eric DeCosta, the reaction was as swift as it was predictable.
From Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun came word that DeCosta wasn’t expected to leave the Ravens. Then Matt Zenitz of the Carroll County Times added that per a source, the Dolphins hadn’t contacted DeCosta, and he wasn’t interested if they did. Then Peter King of Sports Illustrated offered that DeCosta had “no interest” in the job.
Red PR said:Seems reason Caserio denied the job was he would not get a green light in firing Philbin. I think that would have been a great move for a clean slate in coaching staff. Now we get th 6th to 8th best candidate for GM. And news coming out that some players want out. Steve Ross has no business owning this football team. I wish someone would buy it from him, but as things stand more years of mediocrity await.

Worst organization in football. Easily. If not for the equitable nature if the cap, they'd be up for worst in the major sports.
amarshal2 said:Dude, it's the Browns. Easily.
Clearly you didn't follow their search for a new HC after firing the last one within 12 months. You also haven't read up on their owner. Or looked at their record since forever.
Cheer up. You ain't the Browns.
The Carroll County Times reports free agent LT Eugene Monroe is seeking $10 million per year.
Per beat writer Matt Zenitz, the Ravens are offering Monroe $8 million to $9 million per year. So there's a decent-sized gap to be bridged before next Tuesday's start of free agency. GM Ozzie Newsome surrendered 2014 fourth- and fifth-round picks when he acquired Monroe via Jacksonville last October. If Monroe hits the market, the Dolphins are expected to pursue him aggressively.
Agreed. While Byrd is a very good player, there are far greater needs for Miami than safety. If Albert really is a done deal as is being reported, they should look to lock up at least another T and G in free agency. Keeping Tannehill upright and improving the run game are priorities 1a and 1b.pdaj said:I would have preferred Clemons back at reasonable $$, but Delmas played pretty well last season; and now we don't have to worry about Hickey spending 8-10 mil per on Byrd. Solid signing if Delmas stays healthy.
Albert, a Pro Bowler with the Kansas City Chiefs, and Miami agreed to a five-year deal, $46 million deal that includes $25 million in guaranteed money, according to sources.
Mitchell, who has played for the Houston Texans over the last four seasons, is expected to land a four-year, $16 million deal that includes $9 million guaranteed, sources said.
soxfan121 said:Mitchell means Solai and/or Starks is gone, right?
CouchsideSteve said:I've talked myself into the Albert singing - they're flush with cap space and he's a better player than Monroe (albeit two years older), would rather they pay for the premium talent.
Lukewarm on Mitchell if it means Starks signs elsewhere.
pdaj said:
Starks is gone -- he got himself added to Philbin's hitlist with his post-tag behavior last season.
pdaj said:This team needed Albert, but I'm most happy with this Starks signing. He's such a tough, consistent player. I'm pleasantly surprised Miami was able to sign him to such a short-term deal.
sodenj5 said:Miami also signs Shelley Smith today. I can't say I know a lot about him, but he's regarded as an ideal fit in a ZBS, more athletic than a mauler, and his former line coach is now our line coach, so I'm sure he is going to have some familiarity with the system. Miami still needs to lock up another tackle and a guard. One or both of those may be addressed via the draft.
@AdamSchefter Houston Texans reached agreement on two-year deal with former Dolphins S Chris Clemons, per source. #Markman50

X-posting from the FA thread:
Excellent signing by the Texans, has to hurt the Phins and help the Pats.
Clemons played a ton of snaps last year (1158) and was the 9th best coverage rating out of all safeties last year, only allowing %52.4 of passes his way (10th best).
Dear Phin fans -- thoughts?
I'd say Clemons is what he is. Solid but unspectacular. As pdaj said, he rarely comes up with a game changing play, but also rarely makes mistakes and has a negative impact.SeoulSoxFan said:[Mod note: breaking out a new 2014 thread. pdaj, please feel free to edit the thread title as you see fit]
