Let’s get it started with some Wemby. 18 points in 12 minutes against OKC. Holmgren looking very good as well. Stay healthy, guys!

Lots of highlights from today's OKC/SA game, but this one stands out to me:

https://x.com/DedicationHoops/status/1711551883410555207?s=20

This makes me think of a time or two when Gronk made a ridiculous shoestring catch. How the fuck does a guy that size get that low to grab a steal from a guy he's not even guarding? I'm not the only person here to say that Wemby looks like he's gonna be a rich man's Porzingis when he fills out, but this is the sort of play that KP can't in his wildest dreams imagine making. Also this one:

https://x.com/KevinOConnorNBA/status/1711538261460693008?s=20

He's beaten badly, this should have been embarrassing...and he ends up blocking the shot. The offense is fun to see, but I'm sticking around for the defense.

Yeah his defense may well be as impactful as the skills of the top offensive players. He can get strips, he has to be a menace for passing lanes and obviously he is a presence at the rim. He can clean things up in so many ways.

I didn't watch much but I did see one play in early 3Q - someone shot an early shot-clock corner 3P; missed; but Wemby grabbed the rebound while ball was (seemingly) over the rim and then shot a smooth 9 footer from a release point so high that defenders could 8nly stand there and watch. Nothing but net. It was ridiculous - like me playing with a bunch of 13 YOs.

Wemby was very good. Chet was arguably better , sad part is they didn't really face each other as Wemby played mostly PF.

Knicks start in a good place with Brunson, Randle, Barrett, Hart, Robinson, Quickley, DiVincenzo and Hartenstein. They won't win an NBA title with that group, but they're going to be a tough out.

Great timing with the new load management rules kicking in. Definitely a well timed piece

BREAKING NEWS: The NBA changes rule and then simultaneously announces that data supports them in showing that they are right.

My god, the NBA is like many wives out there.

I wouldn't be surprised if load management had very little effect on the development of injuries other than simply lowering the probability of injury due to having less time on the court. But that in itself is a pretty good reason to rest your $30M stars. Also, having players fresh and rested is good too

Is there any evidence from other sports? Have pitch counts reduced pitcher injuries in a measurable way?

I haven't invested the brain energy to think about it before now but what are they going to do with grey situations?

This is basically the Kawhi Rule. So looking at last season, he's coming off a torn ACL and then in November/December had a pretty serious sprained ankle so that put "load management" into full effect for him. How do you regulate a situation where the player can "play" but would like to play it safe in the hope that he can turn it up later in the season (which he clearly did)?

How can they regulate intent and caution?

Yea, this seems like an obvious one (not that I thought of it though). If the amount of games played is zero, as well as practices, the risk of injury is zero (injuries on a court that is). And if you play 82 games + playoffs + 35+ minutes a night, that is a lot of opportunity to land awkwardly on someone else's ankle, or cut the wrong way and tear a ligament, or fall from a hard foul, etc. I would imahgine if you reduce the minutes played by 50% there would be a pretty good correlation with reducing associated injuries.

I usually enjoy your posts, so I'll give you a mulligan here - but what in the world? What an airball.

"Before, it was a given conclusion that the data showed that you had to rest players a certain amount, and that justified them sitting out," Joe Dumars, executive vice president of basketball operations for the NBA, said.
"We've gotten more data, and it just doesn't show that resting, sitting guys out correlates with lack of injuries, or fatigue, or anything like that. What it does show is maybe guys aren't as efficient on the second night of a back to back."
- Bleacher Report

I would love to know the specifics of the data they are using - none of the articles are citing any internal statistics or any studies at all. Even though it appears they are releasing this info to match their agenda of reducing games missed for load management, it would be interesting to know what their data is tracking. Especially since it is convenient for them - and they have been incredibly resistant to cutting the number of games in an NBA season, which seems to be a consensus way to reduce injuries and fatigue of players.

I was kinda shocked that Miles Bridges got a contract, but that seemingly won’t last long.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/38636653/suspended-hornets-f-miles-bridges-criminal-summons-issued

A criminal summons was issued Wednesday for Charlotte Hornets forward Miles Bridges for violating a domestic violence protective order, misdemeanor child abuse and injury to personal property, according to a spokesperson for the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office in North Carolina.

This is old news from last year that the Hornets and NBA were surely aware of unless there is another new one.
It says the new incidents happened this week. It reads like he violated the protective order.

The incidents that led to the criminal summons being issued Wednesday occurred Tuesday and involved the same woman, according to the case summary in Mecklenburg District Court.

Oh wow that's crazy then.

Edit: Something seems odd here. There was an unserved warrant for this violation since January but the criminal summons wasn't issued until today? It sounded like this is from the older known incidents but maybe not. Who are our resident crime experts here?

In terms of committing crimes? Not sure but I know a few people I might nominate . . . :)

So it appears that in January, the victim filed charges that Bridges violated the protective order that was put in place as part of his plea deal. According to this article, the incident in January did not allege any physical violence (which means it could have been as simple as him getting too close to the victim). While I haven't done this in many years, it would not surprise me if the police departments not to put a huge deal of effort in serving Bridges with the warrant.

However, on Tuesday, during a child custody exchange, the victim alleges that Bridges threw billiard balls at the victim's car (which had the kids inside), which (if true) is both violence against the victim and the children. As such, additional charges were filed against Bridges and because he screwed up, the police are going to serve the warrant from January as well.

Kind of like if someone violated their probation by missing an appointment with the probation officer, that might not result in an immediate probation violation but if that person committed an assault, everything outstanding would be used against the defendant.

It's kind of amazing to me that no one got Bridges to have someone else do the exchanges.

Throwing billiard balls and smashing the victim's car window last week? Yikes

Silver can't give this guy an NBA stage.

If Bridge's lawyer can keep him out of prison maybe he can get a contract overseas, but his NBA career should be over

It truly is sad when people can't get out of their own way that costs them their career. Things were working out nicely for him.....he went to the sidelines quietly, the story went away, he snuck back onto the NBA radar and was going to be given a clear opportunity at a second chance. I'm almost always in favor of second chances as they many times bring out the great in people...it doesn't appear that Bridges will be one of those guys however. Billiard balls...seriously? Wtf.

I don't think it's sad if he doesn't have an NBA career. In all likelihood he's probably already had many second chances. (And may yet get another one here for all we know.) What's sad are those two kids in the back of the car having to witness and be subjected to domestic violence. If the only real consequence he suffers is losing an NBA career, then he's already getting off light. Relationships are complicated but not throwing billiard balls at people is not.

I know we have San Antonio fans in our midst but they just haven't been a LP team for years - at least since Kawhi. They are now.

I’ll go even farther, there are so many games available on cable that I haven’t gotten league pass for decades, but I’m considering it this year just for Wembanyama.

I believe the record for dunks in a season is 306 by Rudy Gobert in 2018-2019. Giannis had 279 that same season. Dunks only became their own statistic in 96-97, meaning we don't have data for Orlando Shaq, or certainly not Wilt, who probably has the real record by an astronomical amount. Wemby definitely has a chance of passing Gobert though, with his height and explosiveness, he is just going to dunk everything.

Not to obsess about that dunk, but....

After watching tens of thousands of dunks, we think we know (without having to think about it) how close to the rim someone has to be to dunk a basketball. Wemby just completely destroys that assumption in a way that it's hard to make sense of. The only player I've seen in recent memory that can do the same consistently is Giannis. Flat footed dunks over people from a step farther away than anyone else is basically his thing, a combination of athleticism, coordination and his 7'3 wingspan. Wemby has an 8' wingspan. This will be different.
