He wasn’t going to be a FA, LAD had a $14M club option for 2024 so this expands on that.

Not in a particularly player friendly way, though...just adds 1/$10m with another team option (for $10m) which could put him in the same spot the year after, unless there's actually a buy out in this one.

There were escalator clauses in the current one, I’d bet they’re in this one too and just not reported yet.

Yeah, he also seems to really like playing for the Dodgers, too. He had a $1m trade bonus in his last contract. Could definitely see them just re-upping on basically the same terms.

How does the Reds GM President of Baseball Operations balance his comedy and baseball careers?

In seriousness, I would think that if he's retiring there'd be some sort of joint statement, so maybe this isn't the end of the line. (Not to say he won't decide to in the near future.)

Down goes Anderson again. The White Sox won't pick up Tim Anderson's option and will instead move on after 8 years of their swing-happy shortstop.

Making the move with Anderson leaves the White Sox with openings to address at shortstop, second base, right field, catcher (although Korey Lee is in place), three-fifths of their rotation and whatever bullpen additions are warranted. It’s a tough task put upon Getz for a team steadfastly avoiding the rebuild description and looking to retool for American League Central contention in 2024.
There's some speculation Chicago may simply give the opportunity to their top prospect Colson Montgomery, but putting a kid whose highest level of competition is 37 games of mixed results at AA on the opening day roster might be a stretch. Meanwhile, Anderson should beg for a job in Colorado, where there's plenty of room for balls to drop in and they don't care about winning, so they'd be fine with him flirting with .300 while still posting a below average OBP.

The Guardians have hired Steven Vogt as their new manager.

There was a long list of candidates and it would be silly to think I have any insight into what made one candidate better than another, so I'm good with this. My only opinion was that I did not want retread Andy Green (who's advertised as a great infield instructor – something that hasn't been an issue in Cleveland in about 15-20 years anyway). Vogt is supposed to be a dynamic clubhouse leader type who deals with things with a sense of humor and was adaptive to sabermetrics during his playing career.

Great move by the Cubs, even if they might take a little PR hit in the short term for getting rid of Ross. They upgraded big time at manager and hurt a division rival in the process.

He is getting a lot of money. I guess it seems people think he is worth it.
I think people just saw Bochy win another, it's a small investment for a billion dollar business and it doesn't count against any kind of cap.

What does Counsell have to do with Bochy, though? He’s won one post season series in his career. Good for him that he became the hot candidate, but also seems like a guy the Brewers were ready to move on from anyways.

Bob Melvin hasn't won much either but is also regarded as one of the top managers in the game. Since the new CBA was signed last year, teams have collectively seemed exceedingly eager and willing to spend money to try to improve themselves and here is another example. Also, MIL keeps winning the Cubs' division, who better to snag to take a run at them than their long-time manager?

Good for him that he became the hot candidate, but also seems like a guy the Brewers were ready to move on from anyways.
MIL supposedly offered him around 4/20 to stay, so that is not accurate.

The Brewers offered him $5.5M per year, so I don't think that they were ready to move on from him.

It does seem a bit odd that that's the highest MLB manager salary. But since manager salary doesn't count against the luxury tax, paying up to grab a top guy seems like an easy way to improve your team. I'm not sure what makes Counsell that guy but it seems like the Brewers, Mets and Cubs were all willing to pay him top money.

Is a full list of MLB manager salaries available? I wasn't able to find one with google. I did find this article from Nightingale though: https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2023/10/08/major-league-baseball-managers-grossly-underpaid/71106218007/

Before Craig Counsell agreed to an $8M-a-year salary with the Chicago Cubs, the highest-paid manager in MLB was $4.5M. For context, other sports:
NFL: Bill Belichick, $20M
NBA: Monty Williams, $13.05M
CFB: Nick Saban, $11.4M
CBB: John Calipari, $8.5M
NHL: Todd McLellan, $5M
