In 2023, Salem finished 55-72, missing the playoffs. In 2024, Liam Carroll returns for his 2nd season as Salem's manager.

He took a fairly unique path to Salem, which started in London, England (& included a stop at UNLV where he received his B.S. in Physical Education).

"While I am potentially the only British born-and-bred player and coach to have this opportunity, there's been many that have been deserving," Carroll said. "They blazed the trail. I was just aware there might be some people watching and hopefully [I did them] proud. Hopefully for the ones that are coming next, they'll have the opportunity one day, too."

Salem plays their home games at Carilion Clinic Field at Salem Memorial Ballpark which opened in 1995 & boasts a capacity of 6,300. Last season, Salem reported an attendance of 177,083 (about 2,789 per game).

Here's the A-Ball history:

The Red Sox 1st had a short-season A-Ball affiliate in 1968 in Jamestown, NY. Cecil Cooper was on that team. They moved to Williamsport, NY in 1971 (Jim Rice) & '72 (Don Aase), before moving to Elmira, NY from '73 to '92. That '73 team included the (somewhat) talented Allen Ripley. From '93 to '95 the team was in Utica, NY. In '96 they moved to Lowell, MA. Shea Hillenbrand was on that inaugural team. They stayed in Lowell until short-season A-Ball became no longer a thing after the 2019 season. Ceddanne Rafaela & Chris Murphy were on that final team.

The history of the Red Sox A-Ball affiliates are long & winding & maybe I'll explore it more some other time, but they started in 1933 in Reading, PA. Most players from that early affiliate ended up playing at the highest level, but no one on the team had more career bWAR than Dom Dallesandro's 8.2. They moved to Knoxville, TN in '35, Elmira, NY in '36. Rabbit Maranville played on that Elmira team in his age 44 season after a 44.1 bWAR MLB career. He put up a .766 OPS (3rd on the team) & in 499 PAs had 53 walks & 12 strikeouts. They moved to Hazelton, PA in '37, & then to Scranton, PA in '39, where they stayed until '52 when they moved to Albany, NY. Former Red Sox GM Haywood Sullivan was on that '52 team. They spent '55 in Montgomery, AL before returning to Albany for the '56 season. Earl Wilson was on both of those teams. In '58 they moved to Allentown, PA, & in '61 they moved to Johnstown, PA & a fielded a team that included Wilbur Wood. In '62, Wood (20) went to York, PA with the team.

The 1st Red Sox affiliates seem to have been formed in 1932 & are classified as B-Ball affiliates in Wilmington, NC & Hazleton, PA. They had a long history of B-Ball affiliates after that it appears, which I don't feel like getting into, but to say that some of them seem to have become A-Ball affiliates in 1963 when they all of a sudden had 3, which were located in Waterloo, IA (Bob Montgomery), Wellsville, NY (Tony C & George Scott), & Winston-Salem, NC (Mike Andrews). In '66 Wellsville got swapped out for Oneonta, NY (Amos Otis & Ken Brett). Oneonta lasted only 1 year before the team moved to Greenville, SC in '67 (Billy Conigliaro). In '69, Waterloo was swapped out for Winter Haven, FL (Dick Pole...smh). In '72 they dropped down to 2 A-Ball affiliates, losing Greenville for over 30 years.

Winston-Salem & Winter Haven stayed strong until '85 when Winston-Salem was swapped out for Greensboro, NC (Jim Corsi, who I played basketball with once long ago). In '88 Greensboro became Lynchburg, VA (Scott Cooper & Bob Zupcic). For some reason after the '89 season, the 2 affiliates that were classified as A-Ball were reclassified to High-A, & then Red Sox did not have an A-Ball affiliate again until the Michigan Battle Cats in '95. They were located in Battle Creek, MI & featured Donnie Sadler, Carl Pavano & Brian Rose. In '99 they moved to Augusta, GA & featured a young pitcher whose name I have not thought of in a very long time - Justin Duchsherer. He had an 0.22 ERA in 41 innings.

In 2005, they moved back to Greenville, SC & became the Greenville Bombers (in their previous iteration they were simply the Greenville Red Sox). They became the Greenville Drive in '06, & have kept that name since. They stayed in Greenville until 2021 when Greenville became the high-A affiliate & Salem, VA (C Note, Walter) became the A-ball affiliate.
Here is the way-too-early A-Ball roster projections from SoxProspects (https://www.soxprospects.com/2024.htm):

Rotation
LHP Connelly Early
RHP Nicholas Judice
RHP Elvis Soto
RHP Luis Cohen
RHP Wandy Abreu
RHP Francis Hernandez

It will be an interesting mix in Salem because a lot of the guys projected for both the bullpen & the rotation have pitched either very little or not at all, including Early & Judice. Elvis is the only one in the projected starting rotation who pitched in Salem last year, pitching 24 pretty decent innings. Wandy was pretty bad in FCL & I wouldn't think they would want him in the A-Ball rotation. Hernandez was a good results, bad underlying guy, & he was mostly a reliever in the FCL last year (14 games, 27.1 innings), so I wouldn't expect him to be in the rotation either. I'm a big LuCo guy, though, & think he was the Red Sox best FCL pitcher last year...which wasn't that high of a bar unfortunately. I would expect the other 2 starters to come from the bullpen group of '23 draftees (Wehunt/O'Donnell/Feeney/Carlson), Mullins, or Stebens who, like Judice, was a multi-inning reliever in college. Willian Colmenares is someone who I would expect to take the Elvis route & be part of the Salem rotation a bit later in the year. Eybersson Polanco is another potential candidate for that mid-season promotion.

Bullpen
RHP Blake Wehunt
RHP Trennor O'Donnell
LHP Hayden Mullins
LHP Zach Fogell
LHP Connor Butler
RHP Garrett Ramsey
RHP Cade Feeney
RHP Max Carlson
RHP CJ Weins
RHP Isaac Stebens
RHP JoJo Ingrassia

The most interesting thing about this projected team are the giants...Wehunt & Judice are 6'8 & O'Donnell is 6'7. Seems good to have a group of large humans to bounce ideas off each other. The main thing is that Salem's pitching this year will be a big indication of the quality of Bloom's last draft class.

Inactive Pitchers
RHP Royman Blanco
RHP Smil Guzman

Not a Blanco guy. Would love to know what happened to Smil...he spent all last year on the Restricted List & I haven't been able to figure it out.

Lineup
C Johanfran Garcia
1B Armando Sierra
2B Marvin Alcantara
3B Antonio Anderson
SS Nazzan Zanetello
LF Caden Rose
CF Miguel Bleis
RF Natanael Yuten
DH Justin Riemer

Bench
C Brooks Brannon
C Daniel McElveney
IF Angel Pierre
OF Albertson Asigen
OF Stanley Tucker

Reserve
OF Karim Ayubi

C - As I mentioned in the Greenville thread, I would like it if Johanfran or Brannon show enough to start the season in Greenville instead of Enderso Lira, but if not, that will be an exciting position to watch. I also wouldn't be surprised if Andruw Musett or Kleyver Salazar push their way to Salem by the end of the year.

1B - Sierra is coming off an ok FCL season (104 wRC+) & it would make sense for him to move up, especially if Albert Feliz does. Sierra can also play corner OF. Johanfran or Brannon may get playing time at 1st, too.

2B - They have Alcantara here, but I would rather see a lot of Riemer until Alcantara gets better at hitting (58 wRC+ in 83 PAs in A-Ball last season). Alcantara can back up at 2B & SS. Pierre could also fit into this mix, & Tucker played 2 games at 2nd for Salem last season.

SS - Nazzan getting time here & in CF makes sense. Alcantara & Tucker can back him up. I also wouldn't mind seeing Fraymi De Leon or Freili Encarnacion in this mix.

3B - Anderson only played 3B (8 games) & DH (4 games) last season, so they seem to have him focused here, & it should be a good lane for him to play most days, backed up primarily by Pierre (and/or Fraymi). They might give him a bit of run at SS or 2B. His plus arm & slower twitch is probably best suited for 3B, though.

OF - Bleis should be out there every day if he's going to be in Salem not Greenville, & then a rotation of Yuten, Rose, Asigen (if he doesn't start in Greenville), Tucker & Ayubi works. Could see Nelly Taylor, Kelvin Diaz & Andy Lugo at some point, too.

How good Salem is will be a pretty good indication of the work Bloom has done in the last 2 drafts in terms of the depth pieces, as well as some of the recent IFA classes. A lot of uncertainty and wide variety of potential outcomes, but definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Some more on Armando Sierra from BCamp:

Among the 96 hitters who made at least 110 trips to the plate in the FCL last year, Sierra ranked 33rd in batting average, 46th in on-base percentage, 37th in slugging percentage, 40th in OPS (.761), 37th in isolated power (.133), and 43rd in wRC+ (104), per FanGraphs.
“Armando was a player we scouted later on in his signing year. After scouting him a few times, he stood out for his strong frame and his power,” Romero wrote. “As we continued to see him, it became apparent that not only did he have above average power for his signing class, but he also was developing a stronger approach.”
As things stand now, Sierra is not regarded by any major publication as one of the top prospects in Boston’s farm system. Last June, however, FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen wrote that he found Sierra “really interesting” because — despite having a “tough” profile — “his feel for contact and the flexibility in his lower half are both very impressive for a corner bat.”

Salem's Sunday game I believe is the last one I need to catch up on.

Rough outting for LuCo (5 runs, 4 earned in 2.1 IP on 6 hits & a walk with 3 k's).

Also a rough outting for Max Carlson (5 runs, 3 earned in 2.1 IP on 5 hits & 2 walks with 2 k's). But at least he did this...

Reguilo walked a guy & got an out.

Austin Ehrlicher was good at least. 3 scoreless innings, 2 hits, 1 walk & 3 strikeouts.

JoJo Ingrassia pitched a 1-2-3 9th with a strikeout.

This actually isn't a particularly new thing for Dean... in 3 of his last 4 appearances for Salem last year he allowed 1 or less hits, pitching at least 4 innings, & not allowing any runs.

In those 3 games...

12.2 IP
0 runs
2 hits
10 bb
15 k's

He also had a 5 inning start in May with 0 runs, 0 walks, 3 hits & 7 k's. We shall see if he can keep the walks to 2 or less & add consistency, but the stuff definitely plays.

12.3 k/9 & 10.3 bb/9 last year is bonkers. Dean is 23.

“ I thought I had a great first outing a good start to build off of so I thought there were a lot of positives. I felt really in control the whole time which is hard to do sometime when you’re so amped up and excited to pitch. I thought my slider was sharp, was able to get a few swing and misses on my changeup, and fastball command improved as the game went on.”

Little puff piece on NAZZAN:

With the 50th overall pick, the Boston Red Sox selected the rights for Zanetello, getting a "five-tool player as well and a five-tool person." (MLB.com).
Through a week and a half of Class-A action, we've yet to see the Red Sox' 8th ranked prospect hit the field for Salem. But it won't be long now, and will be difficult to remove him from the lineup once he gets himself established. Zanetello won't be 19 for another six weeks either, so there's still ample time for his skillset to develop and grow. And we can't wait to see where that takes him.
