So are we expecting an All-Star type game where everyone gets a few ABs? I’d really love to see 4 ABs from Roman and Marcelo.

SWBA = SouthWest Baseball Academy out of Sarasota, if anyone is wondering who those kids are.
I hope they have a blast, but why would a group of Sarasota kids go to Ft. Myers for this? The Orioles, Pirates, Braves, Rays and the Tampa area teams are all much closer to do this sort of thing with. A Greg Blosser connection seems unlikely.

The Academy is there. The kids may not be.
Also by my math, only half the teams/ballparks are hosts to the Breakout.

Gonzalez was so stressed about performing on game days it was interfering with everything. The simple idea of treating off-days like game days, focusing less on the results and more on the process eased his mind and helped him realize every start wasn’t a do-or-die evaluation. First, they helped him get back to the basics: Get better sleep and better take care of your body.
Hopefully will have the Meidroth catch highlight soon.

The first Red Sox Spring Breakout game is officially over as they beat the Braves 8-2.

Wikelman Gonzalez battled in the first few innings, but was helped out by his defense and some bad base- running. 3 IP - 0 Hits - 0 ER/R - 1 K - 3 BB.

Roman Anthony continued to look mature beyond his years at the plate. 0-for-2 with 2 walks and a SB.

Ceddanne Rafaela hit ANOTHER homer this spring. 1-for-2 with 3 RBI.

Kyle Teel had 2 hits in his 2 at-bats. Double and single with an RBI.

Nick Yorke also had a big day at the plate with a double, single, and RBI.

Allan Castro went 2-2 with 2 RBI and a double.

Chase Meidroth had a 1-for-1 day as well with an RBI.

Richard Fitts wasn’t sharp in his first inning of work, but bounced back nicely over the last two. 3 IP - 2 Hits - 2 ER/R - 3 K - 1 BB.

Luis Guerrero finished up the day with a scoreless 7th. Hit 100.

The regular Red Sox team blew a 4-3 lead in the 9th & lost 5-4.

Dalbec & Abreu hit homers off Corbin Burnes.

Cooper Criswell allowed 2 runs in 4 innings.

Justin Hagenman pitched another 2 scoreless innings.

Cam Booser pitched a 1-2-3 8th with 2 strikeouts... he's kind of making himself interesting for the 2nd lefty role at some point this season. Joely allowed a run on 2 hits & 2 walks in his inning & hasn't been that sharp the last couple times out.

Gabe Jackson blew the save, but he was a mediocre high-A pitcher last year, so not too surprising.

Is Criswell seriously in the conversation? He seems like a lock for the Worcester rotation to me.

That has been my working assumption for a while. But the illusion of competition may be important to the pitching infrastructure.

They really are pushing for competition. The other interesting thing about that article is they say Bernardino isn't a roster lock...

Bernardino was the Red Sox’ top left-handed reliever last year. He posted a 3.20 ERA in 50 innings. He has allowed just one unearned run in 4 ⅔ innings this spring.

But he’s not a lock to make the Opening Day roster.

“He showed a lot last year but this is a different role,” Cora said. “Towards the end of the season, I think usage and the season got to him. But he made some adjustments in the offseason. He added that cutter, which is an important pitch for him against righties. So he’s in the mix.”
My rough order of confidence in lefty bullpen options is probably something like...

Bernardino (40)
Murphy (40)
Benitez
Booser
Luetge
Joely
Walter (40)
Jacques (40)

Red Sox definitely have some interesting 40 man choices coming up. Hendriks & Giolito will go on the 60, opening 2 slots.

& they also have guys like Heineman, Romy, Jacques, Walter, Hamilton & Dalbec hanging around.

I've seen a few linked tweets throughout ST with Stuff+ numbers, is that public data that's available somewhere?

I'm not really sure where Eno puts that stuff...

I've been quoting some tjStuff+ thing a fair amount.

My understanding is that JetBlue doesn't have the public Statcast stuff, so we miss a lot of data. The Red Sox are of course keeping it internally.

Stuff+ may not be an infallible stat...

The Red Sox leader among guys who pitched at least 20 innings last season?

Kaleb Ort

Ort 125
Pivetta 122
Kenley 120
Winck 115
Llovera/Schreiber 111
Brasier 109
Martin 108

That kind of speaks to why he kept getting chances, don't you think? Location+ was terrible though.

More interesting to me is how much those models hated Bernardino when he was one of the best guys we had.

Absolutely. You can see a lot of what Chaim seemed to value wrapped up in that.

Bernardino is interesting. He doesn't throw hard & his pitch shapes aren't anything to write home about, which is probably why you get results like being in the 1st percentile in chase rate.

https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/brennan-bernardino-657514?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb

But his pitches do something which limits hard contact. Possibly they resemble each other until later so it takes hitters longer to recognize which it is.

Between Murphy's elbow injury & Jacques, Benitez & Booser all getting reassigned, the options are thinning out quick.

I'm not really sure where Eno puts that stuff...
Eno has all of his Stuff+ numbers kept in a Google spreadsheet, he keeps the link to it in his Athletic articles because it's intended to be for Athletic subscribers. I imagine once the regular season starts, Fangraphs will have major league Stuff+ and Location+ numbers tracked just like they did last season. Hopefully they also keep including the PitchingBot model as well. But Eno's sheet will have some additional things like minor league numbers for parks that have Statcast data.

I've been looking at tjStuff+ a lot too this spring, just because Thomas Nestico tweets out a stuff breakdown of every interesting pitcher who throws on a daily basis. It's more convenient to follow, but he seems to only focus on the stuff and not the location, which can be a bit misleading. I'm also not certain of what the differences are between his model and Eno's.

This stat isn't quite correct, but through 7 games for Hagenman...

7.2 IP
0 runs
4 hits
1 walk
8 strikeouts

0.00 ERA, 0.65 WHIP, 1.17 bb/9, 9.4 k/9
Hagenman has thrown 7.2 innings over 7 appearances this spring and has only allowed 4 hits and 1 walk. He also is carrying an impressive 0.65 WHIP and a .148 batting average against.
Hagenman looks to slot into a revamped Triple-A bullpen that Craig Breslow addressed throughout the offseason. Look for the 27-year-old to get chances ranging from multi-inning appearances, all the way to high leverage spots early in the season.
https://beyondthemonster.substack.com/p/justin-hagenman-has-been-near-perfect

Hopefully Hagenman keeps it up & becomes useful MLB depth.
