After Djoker goes ahead 5-4 in the 3rd set, I look at the Aussie Open Site and match stats, and they have Sinner as a 94% favorite right now .
Ugh 5-5 Duece and we are now in an extended delay to deal with a medical condition in the upper deck of the stands

Med down two sets, wins next two in breakers. Low key wild finish to 4th - med double faults at 4-4 to put the match on zverevs racquet…great point from med at 4-5 to even it, followed by a weird shank type return that results in an inadvertent drop shot that zverev can’t get to…ace. Onto a 5th. Both of these guys will have spent somewhere around 7 more hours on court than Sinner come Sunday.
If Sinner doesn't wilt under the pressure of playing for his first grand slam title, I think he wins it relatively easily. The discrepancy in time on court this early in the season will be a huge hill for Med to climb.
Maybe, but Medvedev is incredibly fit, and he does have a full day to recover. Sinner is more skilled , if Sinner plays his best game he should win. But Medvedev has won a lot of matches in his career where the other guy is arguably more skilled.
Oh I dont think this is a slam dunk, because I do think the pressure of a first slam final is a very real thing. But I think the time discrepancy on court is the main reason Sinner is like -250 to win per a few betting sites, which has a implied probability of a notch about 70%.
I couldn’t motivate to watch but Sabalenka crushed Zheng, 6-3, 6-2. She didn’t lose a set here.

Medvedev came out firing, trying to win quickly so his stamina was not tested. His forehand and backhand average speed were both up 5 MPH or so from the earlier rounds, amazing. Sinner didn't know what to do and quickly got down two sets, 6-3, 6-3, and now I'm in the third set, on serve.

Wow. What a forehand to end it. Really happy for Sinner but legit feel bad for Med…put in a ton of overtime this tourney, came out with really smart tactics in this one…but wasn’t quite enough. His second blown 2-0 set lead in Aussie finals.

Yes, exactly, Sinner is better, younger, much better rested and Medvedev almost took him out, but Sinner regained his composure and form.
Sinner got broken to go down 6-3, 5-1 and never got broken again, sixteen straight holds to finish the match.

I am definitely not sad for Medvedev, he seems like a nice guy but I hate watching him play and he was very lucky to get this far. I think he did a brilliant job in the final going for the quick knockout and almost got it (he had 0-30 on Sinner's serve at 4-4 in the 3rd, six points away) but the younger and fresher (and better) player won in the end.
I’ve come around on his style but I get that it’s not for everyone. And I just flat out like the guy…and he’s now the only player to blow two 2-0 set leads in slam finals. Just read this on this xitter as well:

A clip of a young player who is ambidextrous and switches the racket between hands to only hit forehands (he’s the player at the top). Have you ever seen someone do this before, @jezza1918 ?

Interestingly enough yes - I recruited a kid from Maine who hit two one-handed forehands but he ended up at Bates (which is a relatively middling D3 program for reference). I grew up playing with a kid who wasnt quite this ambidextrous...but he would serve lefty (always a slight advantage) and then switch to his right hand for the rest of the point. And could hit overheads with either. He ended up at UMass Amherst. Finally, one of the biggest legends in New England Tennis (juniors and adults) hit two handed from each side, but when necessary could hit one handed slices from each side when on the run.
The kid in the clip though is what they call a 'Blue Chip' prospect...aka if he stays on track he will get a full ride to a top D1 program or go pro. And hopefully not flame out and turn to pickleball.

FYI, Andy Roddick just launched his own tennis podcast. The first episode was great IMO - hourlong convo between him and Jon Wertheim recapping the Australian Open (although the conversation goes in a bunch of different directions as you’d hope). Simona Halep wins (!) her appeal in front of CAS. They accepted that she was not entirely at fault, and that it entered her system from a contaminated supplement.

Ban reduced from 4 years to 9 months (which, given time served, expired last July), she's awarded legal fees too, and she can return to competition immediately.
Color me very surprised, but pleasantly so. This is the first time I've known an athlete to overturn a doping ban and largely win the "I wasn't responsible" argument. That said, I like Halep, and hope she has some good years left on the tour.

Before Sinner was a top 3 guy, Alcaraz brought out the best in his game, and it goes both ways. Their 2022 US Open QF was maybe my favorite match of alltime, I talked about it a lot here already. Must be nice to be able to put tennis courts inside the Miami football stadium. Guess Florida doesn't want a full time tennis center
There are permanent courts outside the stadium. The court inside the stadium is just the temporary main court for the tournament.
