On September 6th, Abel pitched against Portland. He pitched 6 scoreless innings, allowing 1 hit & 2 walks while striking out 7.

ROSIER had the 1 hit & 1 of the walks.

Not to step on your toes, @JM3 , did you already post this somewhere? BOS's list of AFL participants:

Red Sox (Glendale):

Brainer Bonaci, SS/2B (No. 11); Nathan Hickey, C (No. 15); Bryan Mata, RHP (No. 23); Felix Cepeda, RHP; Wyatt Olds, RHP; Zach Penrod, LHP; Corey Rosier, OF; Christopher Troye, RHP

I'm always happy when people bring more info and/or opinions. I think I've only posted guesses & a couple confirmations before, so much appreciated!

My initial quick thoughts on the list...

C Hickey - Makes sense to get him more reps at catcher. Not sure anyone else really makes sense to send.

IF Bonaci - I wonder if this means they definitely plan on protecting him in the Rule 5? Not sure I would want to showcase him otherwise.

OF Rosier - Glad they finally seem to be sleeping on Rosier less. Not a lot of good OF options as you don't really need to send ROMAN & Bleis is too young. But he seems like the best choice.

RHP Mata - Like to see it. He probably needs to be MLB ready next season if he's going to be around & he missed a lot of the year.

RHP Troye - Makes sense. If he can stop walking so many people he definitely has high-lev bullpen stuff.

RHP Cepeda - Was a bit pleasantly surprised by this one. He played a bit over half the season in A-Ball, but he was dominant in A+ & I'm glad they're going to take more of a look at him.

RHP Olds - Olds has been kind of awful & injured...he walked over a batter per inning...but his stuff is intriguing to watch & I like it as an upside play.

LHP Penrod - PENROD! This one is kind of fascinating. It's a good opportunity to get him more instruction in the system as he joined after most of the season was already over & was thrown right out there. Happy to see it.

Some late-season notes on players:

-Bryan Mata is active at AAA and on his final option. When this season is over, he won't be able to be optioned and will either need to be kept in the bigs after spring training or DFAed.

-Zack Kelly is rehabbing at AAA and has been in the big leagues or MLB IL all season. He could be sent to AAA for the rest of the year and it would not cost him an option year.

-Other players out of options and potentially playing for their organizational lives are Mauricio Llovera and Pablo Reyes.

-Justin Turner has now amassed the full $1MM in bonus money for plate appearances. He has 596 PAs (earned $200k each for 480, 500, 520, 540, 560PAs).

-Adam Duvall (331 PAs) has not achieved his bonuses yet, but is on pace to at least get to $500k for 350PAs here in the final weeks (can earn $500k each for 350, 400, 450, 500 PA; $1M for 550 PA).

-After the season when we have 3 FAs (Duvall, Paxton, Mondesi) and 3 options likely declined (Joely, Turner, Kluber), the 40-man roster will still be full at 40. To make room for the Rule 5 draft, they'll need to remove 3-5 players from the roster rather quickly.

Caleb Hamilton & Bradley Zimmer comprise the entirety of the Worcester bench today.

Hernandez & Scott had b2b 2-out singles in the top of the 1st, but Worcester didn't score.

Would have been a 1-2-3 1st for Walter, but McDonough made an error at second with 2 outs. Walter allowed a single before getting out of the inning.

It's hard to find much motivation for this when there are so few remotely viable prospects & I'm left trying to get excited about Rosier & maybe Scott lol

Other Tyler also struck out.

Seems like they brought up the wrong Portland 2B...

A single, a steal & an RBI single for the Iron Pigs in the 2nd.

If Walter is still on our 40 next season, I will feel like something went horribly wrong.

Sogard double, 2 HBP, & despite his best efforts not to, Niko walked in a run.

That was Abel's last batter. New pitcher came in & got Koss to ground out.

Abel's final line in his 1st AAA start...

4.2 IP
2 runs
5 hits
3 walks
3 HBP
6 strikeouts

82 pitches, 49 strikes

Let's check out Olds' #s since returning to AA...

13 games
20 IP
14 ER
21 hits
7 walks
2 HBP
6 WP
21 strikeouts

So not particularly effective...6.30 ERA, but only 3.15 bb/9.

In his 1st AA stint this year...

10 games
25.2 IP
28 ER
22 hits
40 walks
11 HBP
4 WP
33 strikeouts

So yup... definitely much less disastrous afterward. That was a 9.82 ERA & 14.03 bb/9...

I badmouth Walter not because I dislike the guy... just because I don't think he has good enough stuff to have any upside to have a useful MLB role.

Good game today:

5 IP
1 run
3 hits
0 walks
4 strikeouts

67 pitches, 47 strikes

Kaleb Ort came in for the 6th & faced 4 hitters:

Strikeout
Flyout
Single
HBP

Ort came out & Justin Garza came in & walked the 1st hitter on 4 pitches, but then struck out the next on 9 pitches to end the inning.

That's 2 more pitchers I want off the 40...

Sogard walked, advanced to 3rd on 2 groundouts & scored on a Crook single.

3-1 top 7.
