I know its on Draymond's pod (Jrue seems cool with him) but this is worth a listen for a variety of reasons. When you hear Jrue dissecting his trade or just about anything its pretty clear that he operates at a different level than most around him.

I'm a cynical bastard, but the stuff about his wife was pretty intense/touching.

Also, it seems like a very large % of NBA players like Draymond personally, which matches what I've always felt: he's an interesting guy, who does media great, and who goes insane in competitive situations. The world will be a better place when he's on TV/Youtube fulltime.

That was one of the best interviews of a pro athlete. I was thinking losing Jru in the off-season won't hurt but as a fan, I think it will. A ton of respect to him and his family.

Draymonds Twin brother who does this podcast seems like a decent guy. To Bad his brother is an asshole.

Finally got a chance to listen to it; very good pod. I particularly liked the part where Draymond said that when the GSWs wanted to get serious, they'd all agree to stop drinking and then they'd go on a win streak. Shows us how much stuff goes on behind the scenes - in every day life - that might factor into winning and losing certain games.

It wouldn't be the playoffs if the Celtics were fully healthy.
Is anyone ever fully healthy for the playoffs? Look at our opponents last spring. Dejounte Murray was banged up and even missed a game or two, Embiid the following series, Miami was without Herro and Vincent missed time during the series.

Can't let this thread hit Page 2 on the forum after the Game 3 and Game 4 he had in Cleveland. My man was on fire on defense all night and hit some clutch shots. 16 / 7 / 5 in 43 minutes (3rd in points on the team), 4/8 from deep, 3 steals, a block... guy has answered any questions one might've had after the Miami series where he was a bit below his usual level.

After a truly rough start to the playoffs, Jrue has 34 points (13-21 from the field), 15 rebounds, 10 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks over the last 2 games (and he's been truly excellent on defense). This while the other key role players have really stumbled: White/Horford combined for just 25 points on 9-35 shooting, along with some questionable defense. The headline of games 3/4 is that Tatum finally arrived, but Holiday has been nearly as good.

He’s been awesome the past two games. Not only his offense but tonight he seemed to be the only guy that could check Garland

28/7/8 with 3 steals on 10-16 shooting. Jrue was absolutely tremendous tonight. Feels like he’s really starting to get into a groove after a slow playoff start.

Took him a few games but seems like he is the guy who is really stepping up without KP and now that DW has cooled off. It’s very different from his regular season role, but he is still a force when called upon.

Indeed. When the 5th best starter averages 19/6/6 on 61% shooting and excellent defense over 4 straight playoff games, it will cover up a lot of issues.

This is why Brad Stevens brought him in, for games like this. He played some ferocious D along with the offense tonight. Tremendous all around game.

I wonder if Jrue is even more strategically deployed defensively in game 2 - Nekias Duncan flagged possibility of the Jrue one-man-zone which makes sense to have in the bag.

We also saw him on Halliburton on the biggest possessions and I do think that's one we'll see again as Jrue, fully dialed in and focused defensively, remains incredibly impactful.

Agree with others---that game is precisely why you pay up for Jrue and why he's such an impactful upgrade on Marcus. What a versatile and smart player

That layup in OT was not as easy as it looked too. He had to get that shot off quickly against, I think, Turner or Siakam. He really is this team’s DJ. Just has a calming presence.

He is so quietly ferocious in true 1 on 1 situations. Great footwork, great positioning, great anticipation. The other guy may have the ball but Jrue is leading the dance.

Everytime Jrue had Haliburton on him, Jrue would post him down to the basket and get an easy layup. It was really impressive to watch and incredibly efficient

Particularly because "will they put Halliburton on Jrue to neutralize DWhite screening?" was a pre-game talking point. Jrue has quickly made that non-viable.

Jrue is kind of like Rondo with a jump shot.
...And legs like tree trunks. I think there was a possession where he was on Turner squared up, and Turner tried a few times to bump him off his spot, failed, and then just shot over him. Probably Siakam too, IIRC. Having a guard who can't be bullied by wings or stretch bigs... that's a very short list of players (and obviously includes Mahcus).

His defense on Halliburton down the stretch was superlative. It’s also cumulstive as the series goes on - remember what he did to Booker in MIL’s title run.

He’s so fun to watch.
It was interesting to see all the other C's back and Jrue would just shadow Haliburton the entire length of the court, even if Hali wasn't bringing the ball up. He was just dogging him most of the 4th and OT.

Jared Weiss with an article on Jrue and Lauren. Not the best written article but contains some neat anecdotes. It wasn't on my radar screen that Jrue had never been a free agent before so it makes some sense he'd take less to not hit free agency but still have a chance to compete for championships.

I wonder if he wins another NBA championship he stops saying that Lauren is the biggest winner in the family.

Part of me hates making this point, since I spent so many years defending the stuff that Marcus was good at against his foaming-at-the-mouth critics, but... last night was the kind of game where the upgrade from Smart to Jrue was huge

Indiana likes to play a game that's in the neighborhood of barely controlled chaos. Push the pace, fly around the court, and count on the fact that they'll do all that better than you for 48 minutes

Put Smart in that game and he'd have been a wild man. Taken a bunch of sketchy 3s. Made a few bone-headed plays in the 4th along with a few amazing ones. It would have been the full glory and the full agony of the Marcus Smart experience

I defended the guys for years, but I'm really glad to have Jrue on this ride

I noticed this as well. I felt at the time that Jrue simply said “TH will not be the reason we lose.”

This is perfect. Captures my feelings -- the sentimental side of things. And captures, too, my more rational appreciation for the difference Jrue makes. Two players with different vibes, no doubt. Jrue is so professional, so poised, so intentional. Steadier than Marcus. Plays with the heart of a lion, as Marcus does. But rock solid. In big games, Jrue flashes this apex predator potential. But meanwhile, always, plays within the schemes and flow of what the Celtics are trying to do. We are blessed, truly, as Celtics fans this year.

Yeah, a few different commentators wondered aloud whether Jrue's even-keeled personality was more of a fit with BOS than Marcus's fiery demeanor.

Defending Marcus a bit -- with DW and KP as additional dependable options, it is quite possible that Marcus wouldn't feel as strong a need to Do Something (such as take ill advised 3s in crunch time)

That said: when picking intense D first guards, Marcus is real good, Jru is better.

I dont think we watched the same Marcus. The Celtics were his team. He needed to make the big plays and take the big shots. Just ask him.

Yeah, I wish I could agree and I loved Marcus' fire and teamwork. But the next time I see him believe someone else could do something better than he can would be the first, and he was nowhere near the best player on the team for several years here...

Boston goes on to win the title this will be the equivalent of that 83-84 addition of Dennis Johnson that changed the DNA of those teams.

Jrue followed up his big scoring game 1 with 6-7 shooting, 15 points, 3 rebounds, and 10 assists to only 1 turnover, while playing his typical great defense. Playoff Jrue, who knows to figure out what his team needs from each playoff game and tries to deliver it, is a beautiful thing.

He is a calming force. Marcus Smart is a chaos agent. With the temperaments of this team’s superstars, Jrue is a much better fit. You don’t need chaos when you have the most talent. You need calm execution.

Some wondered who was going to make the big defensive play in the playoffs when needed, like Marcus did. Holiday showed in game 1 that it’s him, which shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, since on his resume is a big crunch time defensive play in a 2-2 Finals that lead to the Bucks winning a title.

No doubt.

Boston has two DJs in their starting backcourt, one the acquired this summer, and another that they put in the right role to thrive.

Incredible turnaround from the first 7 games of these playoffs. Lest anyone forget, Jrue was shooting 36.1% from the field, 32.1% from 3, 8.1 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 3.9 APG through game 2 of the Cleveland series.

In the 5 games since, he's at 64.2% from the field, 53.6% from 3, 18.0 PPG, 5.6 RPG, and 6.4 APG.

If BOS goes on to win this, we'll have fun discussing whether Jrue or KP was the more important addition to the team.

I'm a huge Jrue fan so you'll know what side I'll be on. :)

So far, behind Jaylen obviously, he's the MVP of the playoffs for the Celtics. Consistent ball pressure, fights through screens, beyond the Haliburton fumble in game 1, has caused countless terrible shots and turnovers. On the offensive side, Jrue has been careful with the ball, shooting great from 3 and has, particularly in the Pacers series, been trouble for opposing defenses in the paint -- backing guys down, getting rebounds and being ready for the late dish from the Jays. Just huge.
