where the darn libs live
I'm watching Eyes Wide Shut for the first time in preparation for the pod.

This is the worst Christmas movie I've ever seen.
It's a terrible Christmas movie but a genuinely really good movie and it's aged well (as someone who was obsessed with Epstein starting in like 2005, this movie has always resonated with me).

Mal quoting the horniest line said by Kidman is *chef's kiss*. It's hilarious (and obvious) and that Bill and Sean are like "what the actual fuck?"

Yeah, I watched this randomly about six months ago and thought it was significantly better than I remembered (I don't think I'd seen it since I saw it in the theater). I think I actually fired it up because Todd Field is in it and I had just seen Tar.

The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, Juliet Litman, and Amanda Dobbins take a ride to the Upper East Side in their 1956 Jaguar Roadster to rewatch the 1999 thriller ‘Cruel Intentions,’ starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair.

Eyes Wide Shut and Cruel Intentions were originally done for Luminary as part of the Rewatchables '99 project, so they might be using those episodes as filler once the NBA/NFL kicks off in the fall. Remaining eps from Rewatchables '99:

Magnolia
For Love of the Game
Never Been Kissed
Election
American Pie
Big Daddy
Notting Hill
The Insider
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Office Space
The Sixth Sense
The Matrix

They also did a 1999 in review episode where they did quick hits on other major films from that year.

Simmons did an intro that said as much. Not so much to get to NBA/NFL but to cover his "vacation" time. His regular pod just started back up after a hiatus, so I assume new Rewatchables aren't too far off.

Simmons saying that Cruel Intentions was Sarah Michelle Gellar's apex mountain over Buffy is certainly a take.

I did enjoy the pushback he got from Litman and Dobbins everytime he veered into giving praise to Ryan Phillippe. That was funny to me.

Apex Mountain is supposed to represent what's happening in the person's entire career, so he would have linked "Cruel Intentions" with Buffy to declare '99 the Sarah Michelle Gellar apex. He was linking them, not picking one over the other.

Related - yet another reason it's a dumb category.

I listened to the Vacation and My Cousin Vinny episodes while mowing the lawn yesterday. They were both delightful. This pod still entertains the hell outta me.

I need them to do ‘Christmas Vacation.’ I have to think it’s coming eventually.
“Are we sure Christmas Vacation a Christmas movie?” -Bill Simmons probably

I hadn’t seen Cruel Intentions in years but re-watched it for this. What an incredible time capsule and a great “so bad it’s good” movie. It’s such a demented premise but I still love it

You know what did not age well in that pod recorded in 2019? Simmons' speculation about Phillipe's character's sexuality in the film. ("Antagonism towards women", "close to his gay friend", "he kept a diary!")

Actually, it was rotten as soon as it left his mouth.

I got the impression that Christmas Vacation may be coming in December. Christmas movie month? Elf. A Christmas Story. Re-Die Hard. Plenty of options.
Yeah - I believe Bill said they were doing Christmas Vacation this December during the Vacation pod.

He's only said that Christmas Vacation is the best Christmas movie ever about a hundred times on the Pod. Maybe we can stick to his actual shitty takes (which he has a lot of, as much as I love the Rewatchables) and not invent shitty ones he's not going to make.

Edit: It's my favorite Christmas Movie too and it's not even close, and he has said it is coming on the Pod this Christmas.

It was just a joke based on his inane Home Alone take. I’m also surprised it hasn’t been done yet. It’s my favorite too

I do wish they did more theme months and that they were more coherent. Most of the time the selections are picked at random. Why was John Wick 2 done first and still the only one? Could they do theme months based on actors or directors or at least a better theme than “fucked up family”?

Also for the millionth time TELL US THE CHOICE BEFORE THE WEEKEND

Lol at the diary comment. He has some sense of what the movie was based on, right?

He has a lot of these moments. I would say this though -- until about 2022 or so, Simmons would sometimes self correct on a shitty Neanderthal take in a way that gave off a "wait, I'm not supposed to say that vibe." I think more recently when these issues come up, he sounds a bit more genuine in his attempts, such as they are, to actually try to be a better person despite some of his impulses. This could all be imagination, but, anyway, that's the vibe I get from the guy -- which is not that dissimilar to the vibe that I get from a lot guys watching their daughters turn into teenagers and finally waking up and having a bit of an epiphany about what the world holds in store for them.

Listened to the last two because they're both movies I've seen though I wouldn't have ever considered either of them to really be "rewatchables" -- they're fine but forgettable (and I remember the Big Chill as corny, middlebrow boomer navel-gazing). The Bronx Tale episode didn't really make me particularly want to rewatch. Big Chill episode kind of made me want to give it another look at some point. Not sure if I'll ever get around to it.

Listened to the Dumb and Dumber one the other day. I am a BS apologist, but holy shit, he was so condescending to Jennifer Lawrence. He asked her if she knew who John Hughes was. She knew Dumb and Dumber inside and out (way better than him) and wouldn't let her speak. She was very clearly annoyed most of the time and sniped back a couple of times. He of course, didn't realize what she was doing.

His worse moment in that is when he brought up the possibility of a remake and he said something like he could see her in the Lauren Holly role, and she countered that she would play Harry (or maybe Lloyd, I forget). Because she's a woman and he has a limited imagination, it never occurred to Simmons that an A-Lister like Lawrence would only participate in a remake if she were cast as one of the two leads. (Not to mention that she was there to promote her new comedy, in which she played the leading role!)

I'm glad I live in a somewhat small town, because I was smirking and/or legit laughing listening to this podcast during my walk yesterday. I cant imagine anyone who knows the movie would listen to this pod and not enjoy the hell out of it.

"ore-ee-on" for Orion Pictures is an all timer Bill pronunciation.
I almost swerved off the road.

Top tier, indeed.

EDIT: To actually add something to the conversation, I really enjoy the episodes with Kyle Brandt. I think Bill has him on just enough - if they covered more action movies together, I think it'd end up getting stale pretty quickly.

Kyle Brandt is on TV every day. I think it would take a lot to get stale. He's hilarious on the RW and on Good Morning Football.

I get that. I'm just likening the pods with Brandt to junk food - I love it, but I don't want to eat it every day.

I love silly action movies. But I don't want to hear about them all the time.

After five to six years of podcasting, The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, Chris Ryan, and Amanda Dobbins head to podcast therapy to reignite their stagnating love of podcasts. To keep the spark alive in "Wait, This Movie Made HOW Much Money?" Month, they rewatch the 2005 action-comedy ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith,’ starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

In my mind I remembered that movie being something of a flop that was driven only by the tabloid controversies surrounding it. Had no idea it made close to $500 million.

I had not heard it. I think it initially came out as a part of that 1999 series that wasn't on the main feed (or maybe you had to pay extra for). Halfway through and it's a fun listen.

Yeah, Rewatchables 99 on Luminary. They're not on the main feed, but they're out there on the Internet. I'm sure the plan is to scatter them back in here and there to cover vacations or illnesses like here.
