Lombardi made a somewhat similar point in a recent podcast, saying that teams with lackluster HC situations who might be having trouble deciding whether or not to keep the current guy in place needed to think really carefully because they may not ever see as strong a group of potential candidates as early 2024 is offering, with Bill, Harbaugh, and Carroll all on the market.
Is Carroll interviewing? I thought he announced that he was remaining with Seattle in some advisor capacity, and was pumped and jacked about it.

"The Atlanta Falcons have interviewed 10 candidates for their head coaching vacancy, including Bill Belichick and Jim Harbaugh, and still have several other requests and requirements yet to be filled."

This seems like a lot.

That's been Blank's M.O. when he hires basically any position, he does a million interviews, casts a huge net.

Would REALLY like to hear that Jim Harbaugh signed with the LAC soon. Don't love the idea of BB standing there at the end of musical chairs.

Finally the Raiders do something right.
Curious to see if Pierce winds up being Mike Singletary (inspiring ex-player who just couldn't handle the xs and os) or Dan Campbell (inspiring ex-player who seems like he can handle the xs and os).

Guys like DeMeco Ryans or Mayo are much safer bets since they served as D coordinators before getting promoted. But I think Davis's hands were tied with Maxx Crosby and others so strongly supporting AP.

To me Pierce taking over and being what I consider successful is a point in his favor over noobs like DeMeco and Mayo. Half a season of HC work shows me more than being a coordinator because of what I view as the point of the job. DeMeco worked out, I’m talking about pre-hire.

I was doing a masters degree in history at the U during Morgan’s era. The football team was insane - they ran that campus. I probably only know .1% of it, but I had some wild experiences just with the players in courses where I TA’d.

But Morgan was different. He was a history major and he was always hanging around the department hitting up office hours, hanging in the lounge, sitting in on classes. The guy just loved to talk history, get book recommendations, and share what he was reading. He was a really nice guy and passionate about learning.

I was sad when his career ended prematurely, but am not in the least surprised that he’s thrown himself fully into a new line of work. Wish him all the luck.

And if it doesn’t work out with Tepper, Morgan can probably pivot back to history and earn his PhD.

That's a really cool tale. At BC I was a history major and had some of the hockey guys in my classes and I was very pleasantly surprised to see how hard they worked at their academics. There's a ton of writing in the history department, to do all that plus be a college varsity athlete is extremely impressive.

A friend of mine went to BC with Craig Janney and still, 40 years later, talks about what a great player and great student Janney was. And great looking. I think my friend never really got over it.

I grew up to be a professor, and the vast majority of the student athletes I’ve taught have been fantastic (though I have never worked a major football school). These young people seem to attack all of their responsibilities with the same mindset - reps in the gym, game time, or doing homework. They bring it.

But that Miami football team had such an insane culture. One fall semester I TA’d a Western Civ II course with an old school prof. We had one of the starters in our course, but he missed 13 of 15 weeks. This kid came came to the final exam with a note from the team doctor excusing his absences due to asthma. What? Dude can play for the top ranked football team on Saturday but can’t walk across campus on Tuesday? The guy then proceeded to write a single blue book page response to each of the essay questions on the final. I graded everything and shared my final recommendations with the prof. When we got to the football player, I explained why he had earned an F and shared the doctor’s note. The prof told me to give the kid a C because if we didn’t, the athletic department would be up our asses until we changed the grade. I was scandalized at the time, but realize now that everyone was acting rationally within that f’d up culture. And if made me appreciate Dan Morgan even more.

Johnson will probably have a long coaching career, but it seemed like the game was over his head last season.

Wait, the Eagle changed coordinators last offseason too right?

So keep Syriani and again have him assemble a new staff?
Yes, that was apparently the directive from management after their season went down the drain: show us who you'd bring in to replace your staff and if we like it, you get to stay. Apparently the feeling is he needs great coordinators in order to be a successful head coach. I mean, who wouldn't right? Feels stupid to me, especially watching that video where he was flipping off the Chiefs and Hurts made him lower his arm while looking at him like he was a total clown. Which he is.

100% agreed.

He has a great reputation among people in the game but whenever I watched the Eagles I was struck at how terrible the play calling and sequencing was. Hurts took a major step back this year

Love these stories. My wife was getting her Masters in History at BC in 1997 and 1998 and TA'd in 1998 for a European History class. Three hockey players were in the class but only one of them (Bobby Allen 2nd round draft pick of YOUR Boston Bruins) was singled out to her and the professor as a "very special boy" and that any issues they had should be brought directly to the academic administrator for the team so that they could be cleared up quickly. The other two were great, showed up and contributed. Bobby wasn't the best student but managed to get through his sophomore spring which was pretty much what the team seemed to care about. Then we went to Michigan for her PhD and she taught a bunch of football players. Most again were great and interestingly she never got spoken to about any of the players. She had a center who was a western Ohio farm kid who played for three years, never missed a classand graduated with honors. She also had David Terrell who when he had questions would call her and leave her messages where he referred to himself in the third person. We still laugh about those messages. "David Terrell has a question about the reading and David hopes my wife can extend her office hours tomorrow so he can come by after practice." Hell of a college receiver but he needed to leave that stuff to Rickey.

Were the kids at BC kids that played juniors or right out of High School? I have taught some excellent students that were hockey players but I chalked some of it up to maturity as they were slightly older on average.

BC hockey has historically gone the high school route for most of its players. They may have PG'd a year or something but most aren't coming in as 22 year-old freshman.

That David Terrell story is funny. He was living in Chicago after his playing days, got charged with in some murky marijuana distribution & police assault case. Terrell was acquitted and may well have been a wrong place, wrong time thing. A local article quoting Terrell about racism in the NFL mentioned that his son was at Howard Law last year.

Anyway, there was another TA back at Miami who had a football player turn in an essay comparing Athens & Sparta. He argued that the Athenian view of life was “basically feed me, fuck me, and play with my balls.” The TA made copies of that paper and shared it with the rest of us. I’ve still never a crazier student assignment in 25+ years.

Florio just posted that Pete Carroll is interested in the Chargers job...

At some point, Harbaugh needs to make a decision. Especially with other big-name coaches connected to the job. Former Titans coach Mike Vrabel has interviewed for the job. Earlier today, we heard that former Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is making a behind-the-scenes push for consideration.
He wants to coach, the Chargers job is arguably the best available. I can't see Pete hanging around Seattle much longer. He does usually like to keep his movements quiet until the last minute. It's Florio, who knows if it's true or not, but it does make a modicum of sense.

A friend of mine - also a historian - did his grad work at Georgetown, and tutored Dikembe Mutombo, who he found to be really bright (he noted that Dikembe spoke a bunch of languages).

The Morgan story (thanks, @67YAZ!) is really cool. I've heard that due to the timing of the seasons, hoops guys are more likely to graduate than football guys, and of course, different schools have different cultures. Graduating as a footballer from the U is seriously impressive.

Barry seems to have a lot of critics in Green Bay but they were 10th in points allowed. Not sure they’ll end up finding a better guy out there.

Just as background on the Carroll to Charger thing....

Florio doesn't directly say it but I am 90% sure that the source for those rumors is Snoop Dogg. He was doing press for his new movie and said that he went out to dinner with Pete after he got fired and Pete directly told him he still wanted to coach and that the Chargers were his preferred destination.

The rumor before we hired Fangio is he wanted the Eagles job, but because of their postseason run and Jonathan Gannon’s uncertainty, he basically went with Miami because they threw him a shitload of money.

Vic worked some real magic down the stretch, but there definitely felt like there was a little friction. Ramsey was definitely biting his tongue when he was getting asked by the media why he wasn’t shadowing Diggs while Kader Kohou was getting roasted.

Doesn't the Eagles defensive personnel fit a 4-3 system much better than a 3-4? They've invested pretty heavily in the line
