I love the Kentucky Derby. I have gone twice and that was 30 years ago and I love it. The favorite has been scratched (Forte) so it's wide open in my opinion.

Here are the horses/post #s and odds:\

  • 1 Hit Show 26-1
  • 2 Verifying 17-1
  • 3 Two Phil's 7-1
  • 4 Confidence Game 16-1
  • 5 Tapit Trice 9-2
  • 6 Kingsbarns 10-1
  • 7 Reincarnate 13-1
  • 8 Mage 17-1
  • 9 Skinner SCR
  • 10 Practical Move SCR
  • 11 Disarm 24-1
  • 12 Jace's Road 32-1
  • 13 Sun Thunder 30-1
  • 14 Angel of Empire 9-2
  • 15 Forte SCR
  • 16 Raise Cain 30-1
  • 17 Derma Sotogake 7-1
  • 18 Rocket Can 27-1
  • 19 Lord Miles SCR
  • 20 Continuar SCR
  • 21 Cyclone Mischief 33-1
  • 22 Mandarin Hero 21-1
  • 23 King Russell 32-1
So 18 horses will make the run.

I am going with 2 horses from the same stable #5 Tapit Trice and #6 Kingsbarns.

There are a lot of websites to look up info on todays races and specifically the Derby, I like: https://www.kentuckyderby.com/horses LINK

Race time is sometime between 6:30 and 7EST and NBC has live coverage of all the races today.

Is it just me a or did the start time get later for this? I swear it always used to be in the 5:00 pm hour. I guess they found a way to drag it out to maximize money.

I think I heard this on the telecast...Mage was the 4th horse in the past 5 years to win with double-digit odds. Thought I'd check it out:

  • 2023: Mage - 15.21 - 1
  • 2022: Rich Strike - 80-1 (the second longest odds in history (Donerail, 91-1, 1913)). Medina Spirit actually crossed the finish line first, but was later disqualified due to testing positive for betamethasone)
  • 2021: Mandolorin - 26.9 - 1
  • 2020: Authentic - 8.4 - 1
  • 2019: Country House - 62.5 - 1

Couple of fun betting stories recently.

The bartender at our club runs a $20 pool for each of the big horse races. You just get a random draw number. My friend got #8, Mage, he knows nothing about horses, but he proceeded to then go and bet $320 across the board on him ($200 on one site, and $120 on another, because he couldn't find a site to take it all). He cleared like $9,000.

In 2019, my brother who knows less than nothing about horse racing, was walking into Foxwoods or Mohegan for a country music concert (him and his wife are big fans) and they noticed a horse named Country House, so he threw $100 on it to win.

This shit does not happen to me.

Big bump.
No idea who I’m picking but want to get the day rolling.
And TIL that the Belmont will be run at Saratoga this year.

Derby and Masters are both on my sports bucket list. I wonder which would be the better choice if I could only do one.
For me it’s the Derby now. I’ve passed on a couple opportunities to go to the Masters, because my cocky self has decided that I want to play Augusta, not watch the Masters.
Plus the Derby just looks like a blast.

I passed on a Masters trip because just getting there for a day is not particularly easy /quick if you're not one of the folks flying a private jet into town for the event. And if the weather stinks...

I took a Churchill Downs tour about a month ago and it was great. I never really thought about going to the Derby, but now I want to someday. What an event.
Same here, but I'm not going unless I can afford to be in the stands. I've done the Indy infield, but at the Downs I want to be able to see them run.

I've been to the Belmont twice including with Big Brown going for the triple crown. I've gone to the Travers half a dozen times. Never been to any golf event, but I think a day at the Masters is an easy choice given it's 8 hours rather than 2 minutes.

Besides if I'm at Churchill Downs, I want to be running in it, not watching it.

Today I learned the Derby is not the last race of the day, or the mini-meet, at Churchill Downs. Has it always been that way, or is that a parking clearing measure?

Everything I know about Mystik Dan I learned in the last 5 minutes, but he does not look like a Belmont or Preakness contender based on that race. But maybe he runs a different race on a longer track.

Bob Baffert is back for the Preakness and Belmont (he's banned at Churchill Downs) and one of his trainees - Muth or someone else - will likely obliterate this bunch.

What a race. Best triple crown race I’ve ever seen.
Derby, Travers, Belmont, big stakes are not the last race in the card. They want you to bet the “future” plus lets the crowd clear. Gives a chance to recoup your losses.
I hit the exacta on the 13 th race to get back on the plus side.

All the work they did has Churchill looking awesome. And screw the golf versus 2 minutes. That was an all day great card. 8 hours of racing. And honey mint juleps.

And no horses injured. Big win. Just not for me

The Preakness is shorter than the Derby--a mile and 3/16 vs. a mile and a quarter.

I'd be happier for Mystik Dan and his connections if my trifecta didn't come in 2/3/4.

Had to play Mystik Dan for the name, played across the board. My wife went with Catching Freedom, and if that race lasted another 300 yards or so, that horse would have been the winner.

I’m less than a mile from Mystic Ct and I didn’t bet him
