Yeah, five blocks last night. That skillset, at that age, and that height. Without meaning to sound hyperbolic, has the NBA ever seen this before? Lebron was great at 19, but he didn't tower over the rest of the field.

At his time, Wilt was unlike anything the NBA had seen. He ran over the league his first few years, and it took Russell years to figure out how to play him.

But yeah we need a Wembanyama-a-rama thread, he's the biggest news in the league this year, among some strong competition.

Not to diverge too much on Wembanyama (I agree wholeheartedly he alone is thread worthy), but the bolded is a bit overstated.

In Wilt's rookie year, his scoring average and FG% was roughly the same in his matchups against Russell. In the 6 game playoff series that followed, Wilt average nearly 7 ppg less than his regular season average, which started a trend that continued literally every single season since up until Russell's retirement in 1969.

It was Wilt's 3rd season in which he averaged 50.4 ppg, an NBA record that stands to this day. In 17 regular season plus playoff matchups that year, Wilt averaged 37.2 ppg. He took a lot of shots to get those points, which is reflected in the fact that his FG% was nearly 4% lower when matched up against Russ.

Should note that Russell's numbers were down as well. Wilt was a good defender in his prime, and the team's strategy was to allow Russell to expend his energy entirely on defense.

I’m too young for that, but I remember being a kid and watching the 1971 Finals with Kareem and wondering how anyone could ever beat that team and that player. Anyway, early but similar vibes.

I feel like it might be worth Wemby having a thread all to himself. Celtics better win the title in the next 2 years.
Point taken about how good he is (and I'm ready for the thread too), but it's basically unprecedented for one guy to be a 2017 Dubs-level "don't even bother" juggernaut.

Going to that level within 3 years would be just completely unprecedented, and the league has seen a lot of physical freaks of various types.

Lots of them *make* the Finals ahead of schedule (Shaq, LeBron, Sampson), but winning it then is very rare, nevermind becoming an invincible dynasty.

Somewhere
Not quite the same but we had Garnett and Durant with somewhat similar physical profiles and a lot of great skills. They were/are game changers but their teams needed more than just them to win titles or even compete.

Agree. Although I get that the thing that has people jizzing over Wemby is the extra 6 inches of length he has even on those freaks.

The difference between Wemby and Garnett coming into the league is Wemby exists in a time where bigs are not put in a box and forced to do a limited amount of things. Garnett was never really empowered to handle the ball and shoot threes, while Wemby has grown up in that era. A lot of historical, game changing big men were handicapped by the preconceived limits of the game of what a big man "should" do.

Wait. What? This is a Celtics forum thread and we're talking about a Spur, however good he may be. Did I miss something or should this be moved off-Celtic?
The Port Cellar is SoSH's NBA+ basketball forum.

Ok. Then I feel stoopid. But I think that any "Celtic" forum should be limited to...you know..Celtics. my bad otherwise from a member who doesn't come here often.
Pretty much all of us here are more than just Celtics fans, and love basketball/the nba in general.

Have you, I dunno, considered that who the Celtics play is -also- fair game? They can't play themselves, after all.

To quote Sun Tzu, “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

It's fair to observe how unique it is though. We didn't have a Kobe thread. Didn't have a Lebron thread. No Steph Curry thread for us. But then again, they were all, at least in some respect, precedented. Better versions of what came before, but evolutionary. But Wemby is jaw dropping in an entirely new way - revolutionary. And I think we all need some way to help process it all.

Ok. I give. But I think the thread should recharacterized as "Celtics-NBA" because a "Celtics Forum" is too misleading. Just my don't-come-here-often 2-cents worth. I'll go away now.

Ralph Sampson is my closest comp.
Ralph Sampson makes sense. I remember John Thompson saying something about how Ewing was an actual center who played inside, and who cares if a 7'4" guy can handle the ball or shoot from outside since that's what your smaller guards are for.

But the game is completely different now, and his size and skill-set could be amazing and terrifying.

But we had a Linsanity thread . . . Even though wasn’t called that

A more fluid Ralph Sampson on defense is what I’ve been thinking also, but offense I have no idea. The best I’ve come up with is a 7’3” Adrian Dantley or Alex English, a prolific scoring SF who weren’t primarily long range shooters.

Don't leave....come around more often then. There is a lot of fascinating stuff discussed around the league which is indirectly connected to the Celtics. We discuss opposing teams, opposing players, opposing coaches, opposing GM's. When the Celtics play against these teams the reader, and even contributors learning as we go, have a greater background on that particular Celtics opponent.

I have heard many Celtics fans everywhere say they either don't subscribe to League Pass because they only watch the Celtics or out of towners who do subscribe only for the Celtics feed. My tip of the day would be to purchase this product and listen to Celtics games on the opponents feed even if you are only interested in the Celtics. Not only do you get a different perspective each game but also we see how the team and our players are viewed across the league.

I wouldn't bother if the opponent is Toronto, though.

The Celts, Bruins, and Pats forums all have various threads dedicated to the league and/or other teams. Only baseball is divided into multiple sub-forums dedicated to more focused subject areas. And it makes sense. There is likely not enough bandwidth to subdivide the forums outside of MLB.

Looking forward to the Porzingis/Wemby matchup. Zinger might be the closest current comp we have.
Agreed.

KP probably has the closest measurements in the NBA. Still Wemby's standing reach at 10' is ~7" longer than KP

100% this, really enjoy listening to the opposing team feeds.

Sometimes you get some generic analysis (Doris crap) "Jaylen Brown is an All-NBA defensive player" stuff. BUT You definitely get a good idea of what other teams are trying to do against the C's. Scal is edgy and he does a good job, but his slant can get repetitive.

We should expect a lot of folks to pile into the comfy, cozy confines of the Cellar with the Pats/Sox throwing up on themselves.

This has been answered ad nauseum. We do not get enough traffic on the subforums to justify creating sub-sub forums for them. People wouldnt go to those parts of the site, it would just fracture those conversations out and ultimately lead to less conversation.

Yeah, I don't think it's too hard to figure out. Okay, the baseball forum looks a little different, but that's fine, because apparently the traffic justifies that. I think the mods do a pretty good job here.

Separately, on Wemby: apparently he was 5' 11" as a 13 year old. Then he grew to 7' 2" by age 15. That's some growth spurt.

Wild that the length difference between KP and Wemby is the difference between a big guard and a center.

This is a great tip. My favorite random announcing game from last year was listening to the Hornets announcers absolutely gush over Robert Williams. Like a parent delighted by the actions of their young child, I was almost embarrassed for them.

The one exception, and I swear I was thinking this before I saw Royal Reader's post, is Toronto. Those guys fucking suuuuuuck. I don't think I've ever rooted against a team primarily because of their announcers before, but here we are.

Canadians have a really weird Napoleon complex going wrt basketball, and it comes out hard in those Raps broadcasts.

I don’t have league pass but NBA TV is great for seeing other broadcasts. The highlight show cuts into the end of a lot of games too. It’s not quite redzone but it’s really good.

I, for one, am looking forward to @JM3's takes on the Maine Celtics in the G League forum
