Only real surprising to me about this article was that BA has Hickey as the Red Sox 10th best prospect. Seems high.

Hickey needs to improve his defense, including his throwing, to stick at catcher. He also was a corner infielder at Florida. Baseball America ranks him Boston’s No. 10 prospect and No. 2 catching prospect behind 2023 first round pick Kyle Teel who has an all-around game.

If you play deep dynasty fantasy baseball, they seem like a really good resource, though. Apparently they're offering these scouting reports for free & then they'll be subscription only next time with the more detailed stuff.

Zach Penrod, LHP, BOS, 26
Penrod went four innings for the second consecutive outing. He completely stymied Mesa, allowing just one hit and three total baserunners while striking out five. He generated nine whiffs in 66 pitches.

The Red Sox signed Penrod out of indy ball just two months ago, and he’s been excellent since joining the organization. He posted a 2.18 ERA in 20.2 innings with Greenville before the AFL started and has yielded just one earned run in 8 innings since arriving in the desert. He’s also just one of two minor leaguers that I know by memory is from Idaho – him and Kyle Manzardo.

Nathan Hickey, C, BOS, 23
Hickey appears to be an under-the-radar name to keep an eye on in the Red Sox system. The Red Sox took him in the 5th round of the 2021 draft, and he’s since hit the ball very well, putting together a .936 OPS in A and A+ in 2022 and a .858 OPS in A+ and AA in 2023.

He had a hit and three walks in five plate appearances last night. The first week of competition hasn’t been incredibly kind to Hickey, but I’d look for him to turn that around.

Corey Rosier, OF, BOS, 24
I didn’t know much about Rosier before diving in for this recap. He was a 12th-round pick by the Mariners in 2021 and has been dealt twice already in his short minor league career; first to San Diego along with Ray Kerr in exchange for Adam Frazier, then again to Boston alongside Eric Hosmer, Max Ferguson and cash at the 2022 deadline.

He had two hits in five ABs on Monday, neither of which were for extra bases, and added a stolen base in the third inning off of Royber Salinas and Miguel Palma. I don’t think there is a lot of fantasy intrigue here. He’ll go unranked on my next iteration.

Rosier is batting 7th & playing LF.

Pretty positive Hatfield is correct & he is eligible. Lots of semi-interesting 40-man decisions coming up.

I really hope they clear off the low ceiling people like Walter, Hamilton & Dalbec to make room for more interesting people.

Rosier hit an RBI triple in the 8th, but Glendale lost 17-4.

Rosier was 2-4 with a triple & 2 RBI. He's hitting .375 with a .881 OPS.

Second consecutive day on the rundown for Rosier who was 2-4 with a triple and two RBI. He’s been really solid in the back third of Glendale’s lineup and is just one of two batsmen with an OPS north of .800 on their roster as of the time of writing.

He’s got a meandering minor league career already at 24. Here’s what I wrote yesterday detailing his path to the Red Sox:

I'm guessing that policy includes all those things but doesn't necessarily mean he violated all of the terms.

Rosier 0-2 with a groundout to 2nd & a bunt out to 3rd.

While I am not suggesting that this is anything less than awful news (pending any actual info about why he was restricted), this is one less headache before the Rule 5 process. No reason to protect him; he is less likely to be selected and if he is, sayonara.

I mean, yeah, it's better to get this news prior to the R5 addition deadline (11/14)... but we should probably wait & see what's going on before shipping him to Japan.

I mentioned this in the other thread, but it's kind of odd they suspended him & sent him back home to Venezuela, then let him play in the AFL, then changed their mind.

Could either be nothing tooooo crazy, or it could be something that they found out more information after ok'ing AFL & found out it's really bad.

But yeah, it's not good.

Mata struggled, too.

1 IP, 2 runs, 3 hits & a wild pitch & a strikeout. 21 strikes in 27 pitches, though, which is interesting considering his control problems earlier in the year. Wonder if they're working on something with him.

Glendale is down 16-1 batting top 9.

yeah I sucked today, but that's not why I'm embarrassed.

a thread:

feeling confident, well prepared, and ready to compete, I was called out of the bullpen with a runner on 1st and 2 outs.

I came in and walked the first dude I faced on 4 straight.

proceeded to give up 4 hits, 1 of which was a homerun, and walked 2 before getting the ball taken from me by my manager.

the same manager who had seen me punch out 37 in 18 innings of work w a 1.96 ERA in Greenville.

but that's besides the point.

see how hard it is for me to get over it?

the point is:

after I got yanked and let myself and my guys down, I stayed in the dugout for an inning and a half.

I was bad vibes - rightfully so I think. Who's happy after, arguably, their worst professional outing?
but, how unfair it is of me to bring the vibe of the dugout and team down who still have to compete.

when I had that realization I went back to the clubhouse, walking by fans, scouts, and everyone in between feeling ashamed of my performance.

when I was in the clubhouse, in the safety of my own company, I picked up my phone (another reason to be embarrassed).

but, it turned out to be a massive positive.

the picture was taken of me when I was playing in the Cape Cod League for @CotuitKettleers taking notes, about a month prior to getting drafted.

I've always been a notetaker - @bradfo & @BBisntBoring can attest.

But, the part that got me was "stay locked in & continued to be a great teammate, even while in the doghouse at UCR"

A terrible outing I had in college (@UCSB_Baseball) was a reason why I was drafted by the Boston Red Sox.

Immediately after reading that, I changed shoes, wiped the self pity off my sleeve and went back out to support my teammates who still had to compete.

I was embarrassed because I was feeling sorry for myself. It's selfish and it's not who I am.

I swallowed my pride and did what I could to be the best teammate I could be despite a poor performance.

My takeaways from the outing?

1. working on increasing velo by moving faster in my delivery sped me up (increased velo today ✅)

2. got behind and good hitters took adv.

Which brings me to why I'm sharing this with you.

I have no idea how the decision makers in my organization, life, etc will perceive me being public about this, but I promised myself - if I was going to do this social media thing I was going to do so authentically.

This is no different than what I was writing in the picture of me journaling in the Cape.

The reasons I chose to do so digitally:

1. document my journey for myself, my family, and my future family.

2. build a brand that will long outlast my baseball career.

3. because I need an outlet, I need to flush it.

The best of the best have shitty outings, it's how they respond that separates.
