Wikelman pitched 5.2, 0 runs, 1 hit, 3 walks, 10 strikeouts. He's been on quite a roll lately, too.

In his last 5 starts, 25.2 IP, 7 ER, 16 hits, 9 walks, 45 strikeouts, 2.45 ERA.
His SO/IP continues to be insane, even for this era of higher strikeouts

The FCL Red Sox won 7-4 this morning.

Gilberto Jimenez looks like he doesn't need much more rehab, playing CF & hitting 3-4 with 2 homers & a steal.

JOHANFRAN went 1-3 with his 3rd homer & a walk.

JOHNFRANK went 2-4 with a steal.

FRAYMI went 2-4.

Luis Cohen, 20, started & went 4 scoreless innings, allowing 1 hit & 2 walks to go with 4 strikeouts...lowering his ERA to 6.30. Cohen was signed for $10k in January '22 & is from Chichirivichi, VZ.

Jeremy Wu-Yelland, unlike Jimenez, probably need more rehab. He allowed all 4 runs in 1 inning.

They only played 7 innings. Not sure why. Don't see a doubleheader or anything.

DSL Red Sox Blue lost 5-4.

YOEY (Yoeilin Cespedes) went 2-4 with a walk.

STARLYN (Nunez) went 2-5 with a double.

DSL Red Sox Blue - Ricardo Rodriguez

RickRod, 17, was signed as an IFA by the Red Sox in January for $50k & is from Maracay, Venezuela.

He is a 6'0 righty who allowed 7 runs over 6.2 IP in his 1st 2 starts.

Today, Rodriguez pitched 4 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits & a walk, picking up 4 k's in a game DSL Blue eventually won 2-1 in 10 innings.
RickRod again pitched 4 innings without an earned run, but allowed an unearned run, 2 hits, 3 walks & again picked up 4 k's. ERA down to 4.30.

DSL Red Sox Red won 4-3.

Juan Henriquez wasn't as good as last week...

DSL Red Sox Red - Juan Henriquez

Henriquez will turn 17 on Thursday. He's 6'0 & was signed as an IFA this month for $30k. He is from Imbert, Dominican Republic.

Henriquez had a 5.87 ERA over 7.2 IP in his 1st 2 starts. 11 strikeouts & 4 walks coming into today.

Did this today though:

But he did strike out 6 in 4 innings, allowing 2 runs.

Worcester lost 4-0 today & nothing good happened imo.

Rafaela went 1-4? Andrés Núñez pitched another scoreless inning?

A+ - Angel Bastardo

Angel was signed as an IFA in July 2018 for $35k. Bastardo is from Morón, Venezuela. Good fastball/curveball but needs to improve his change up if he wants to continue on a starter path.

Has moved up 1 level per applicable year:

'19 - DSL Red Sox, 3.71 ERA in 51 IP (17 y/o)
'20 - No season
'21 - FCL Red Sox, 6.67 ERA in 29.2 IP (19)
'22 - Salem Red Sox (A), 4.50 ERA in 82 IP (20)
'23 - Greenville Drive (A+), 4.14 ERA in 58.2 IP (21)

Has some nice looking stuff:

Started off the season slow, but even then had an elite whiff rate.

View: https://twitter.com/drivetofenway/status/1656683723524386816

Strikes out 11.7 per 9 IP, but walks 4.4. If he can improve his control, could easily be a multi inning bullpen arm in a few years. Currently #36 on SoxProspects top 60.
Bastardo pitched well for Greenville today.

He allowed 1 run in 5 innings, 5 hits, 2 walks, 7 strikeouts.

Manchester, N.H.
It won’t show in the box score but Mayer was pretty impressive tonight. Made real solid contact in three PAs (with luckier placement it’s a two or three hit game), worked the count even as the Fishercats SP (#7 in TOR) began mowing down guys the second time through, fouled off some tough pitches. I bet those will start finding holes soon. Sox had some real strong contact early on until Robberse hit a groove. Nathan Hickey in particular looked like he can swing the bat. I know D is a major concern but the bat is there for AA.

Dobbins was…fine I guess. The stat line seems apt there, Toronto/NH was making solid contact much of the night but he held his own.

Greenville game has started. Blaze got hit then Bryan Gonzalez hit a homer.

Don't have video of that but here is his walk off hit from a couple weeks ago.

B-Gone is 21 & from Villa Mella, DR. He was signed to a $500k IFA deal 5 years ago today (happy anniversary!).

Right handed bat-first corner outfielder. Who has been meh at every level so far. He's still young, though, so we shall see.

After his 7th homer of the season, he is now hitting .233 with a .688 OPS.

Over his last 4 starts, JDE has pitched 22 innings, allowed 5 ERs, 19 hits & 4 walks with 21 strikeouts.

Over that period, that's a 2.05 ERA, lowering his overall ERA to 4.74 after a rough start to the season.

Alex Erro had a day...

Erro was drafted in the 17th round in 2019 out of Northwestern & signed for $125k.

He's now hitting .300 with an .830 OPS, but 25 & in A+ isn't great.

Greenville won 13-2. Will get into some more good performances later. Blaze was 1-5 with that HBP.
Erro is kind of an odd player. Listed at only 5'9", a former infielder who started playing catcher in 2020. His Sox Prospects page says he has no in-game power, and he's only hit 6 HRs in his minor league career before today.
Before today, he was hitting 286/378/381, with 19 walks to 24 strikeouts in 126 at-bats.
He's also 7 for 9 in stolen bases.
Sounds a bit like Wong, in that he's short for a catcher, can cover other positions, and seems like a (relatively) fast runner. It'd be great if he keeps up the HRs.

Allow me to tell you the tale of one Brock Fortress Bell (because I saw by accident that his middle name was Fortress & could not just let it go).

Actually, nvm, beyond the fact that he's former All Star SS Jay Bell's son, & he was one of many seemingly poor draft picks in DD's last draft, there's not a lot exciting going on.

The Fortress is 25 & was a 7th round pick out of State College of Florida & signed for well over slot at $465k.

The Fortress has moved from Salem to Greenville this year & pitched 2 scoreless innings today. He has been ~meh in both places.

Here's the '19 draft list btw.

We've gotten a bit from Murphy & Walter this year, & guys like Lugo, Zeferjahn, Scott & Erro still have a chance...& maybe we'll get Noah Song back, but it hasn't been great.

Turns out Ruchard Bleier is actually starting for Portland today. Not sure if he's opening for BVB or if they're holding BVB because they need him in Boston now lol

I mean... he got one game in Lowell after rookie league in 2019, the 2020 season was lost, and he was hurt and missed 2021 and 2022 to injury. I'm really happy to see him out there at all.

It's true - I missed the 4 year gap on his resume. My apologies to the Fortress family.

Brendan Cellucci, who just turned 25 the other day, apparently felt left out. The '19 12th round pick out of Tulane signed a $345k signing bonus.

The 6'4 left hander had an awful season going, but he pitched 3 scoreless innings to get the win for Portland today, striking out 7 & allowing 2 hits. In the process he lowered his ERA to 7.96.

Here's a Tweet about it...

Overall the K% is down to 19% in AA after being at 22% in A+. Something to watch, as that 25% K rate last year was one of my major concerns with his profile. If it continues to trend down, watch out.

Also,
a little surprised there isn't more interest in Stephen Scott, given Reese Mcguire's relative mediocrity and Wong's slide as a hitter.

66880

As the minor league thread's patron saint of guys with high BB rates, Scott is my new favorite binkie. He's posted BB rates above 16% at nearly every level, and has had a K% below 20% almost everywhere. Decent pop, especially for a catcher, with 8 home runs in less than 200 PA this year. The BABIPs have been consistently on the low side at every level besides a Duran-ish .392 at A+ back in 2021.

Reports are he's still a work-in-progress defensively, but also that he's not awful. Wong and Mcguire has been a decent tandem this year defensively, but with Wong's K rate ballooning to 34% and Mcguire hitting .267 despite a .BABIP around .380, you might wonder if there might be room for Scott on the 40 man roster, or if he becomes trade bait (he's Rule 5 eligible as of this year).

Ronaldo Hernandez is also in the conversation, of course. His approach has improved this year to the tune of a 10% BB rate while also significantly cutting back on the K's. He looks to be having some bad BABIP luck and is better at catching thieves than Scott is, but is reportedly very bad at framing/receiving. They're an interesting, flawed duo, but both could be average-ish hitters if they make the necessary adjustments.
