Today's projected starters...

Gudiño hasn't been particularly good & isn't really a starter. The AAA pitching depth is still severely lacking.

I guess Portland is probably going to be running a bullpen game? Or CJ Liu would make sense to me since he hasn't pitched since last Sunday.

Dalton Rogers has had 2 really rough outtings after 2 great ones. I was really enjoying his early part of the season so hopefully he gets back on track.

The most exciting projected pitcher today is obviously YORDANNY who will hope to build on his impressive first start for Salem.

FCL & DSL have already started so will do those separately.

Yeferson Vargas started for DSL Blue & pitched 4 innings, allowing 1 run, despite 6 hits & 2 walks. Seems like a good name for a boxer.

Yeferson turns 19 in August & signed for $10k in December '22 out of San Pedro de Macoris, DR. He lowered his ERA on the season to 2.70 in 16.2 innings.

DSL Blue is currently losing 2-0 in the 6th inning & YOEY is 0-3.

Just some really good pitching & really cool names up & down the organization..

WUILLIAMS!

View: https://twitter.com/SoxProspects/status/1671197990919319561

Not to be confused with the Mariners 19 y/o pitcher... Wuilliams Rodriguez

https://www.milb.com/player/wuilliams-rodriguez-805777
WUILLIAMS sighting.

He from Barquismeto, VZ, signed for $50k this January & doesn't turn 18 until November.

The opponents scored 4 runs in the 3rd, but they were all unearned & I choose to not consider the home run that happened after a throwing error on a sac bunt & 2 strikeouts.

On the day, WUILLIAMS pitched 4 innings allowed 0 earned runs (4 runs), 5 hits & 1 walk, & struck out 4.

On the season WUILLIAMS has a 1.57 ERA in 23 innings.

DSL Red is up 7-4 in the 6th inning.

Eyberrson Polanco started for the FCL Red Sox & it's not going well.

The 19 y/o from Lagunillas, VZ is 1 out into the 4th inning & has allowed 8 earned runs, raising his ERA from 3.46 to 7.16.

Polanco signed for $50k in July '21.

The FCL Red Sox are losing 8-1 in the 4th inning.

At least JOHANFRAN is 1-1.

DSL Red held on for an 11-6 win.

Franklin Arias went 2-3 to improve to a .426 BA & 1.015 in 68 ABs, & picked up his 3rs steal of the season.

Arias is a 17 y/o SS from from Caracas, VZ who signed for $525k this January. His glove is supposed to be his carrying skill, so the offense so far is super encouraging.

C Andruw Musett, 17, went 3-4 with 2 homers & a walk to raise his average to .327 & OPS to .962.

Musett is from Barquisimeto, VZ & signed for $90k this January.
Musett was 2-5 today with a double & 3 RBI - .339/.967.

Yohander Linarez went 3-5 with 2 doubles.

Yohander isn't getting his name in caps yet, but still a good name. He's now hitting .311 with a .788 OPS.

Linarez is 18 & from Barquisimeto, VZ. He signed for $10k in January '22.

DSL Blue fell behind 8-1. They made a furious come back, scoring 6 runs in the 9th, but fell short, 8-7.

Their best hitters (Cespedes 1-5 & Nunez 1-4 with a walk) had non-notable games, but their 9 hitter went off.

Jhoan Solarte turns 17 on the 4th of July (tomorrow) & is from Naguanagua, VZ. He signed for $10k this January.

He went 2-5 with homers in the 8th & 9th innings (his 2nd & 3rd of the season) & had 5 RBIs. He is now hitting .200 with a .665 OPS.

Naguanagua is a pretty cool name so I looked up the place. Don't feel like writing anything about it, so here's a Wiki link:

They ended up going down 11-1 before making it a bit more respectable & losing 12-9.

Mikey Romero went 2-3 with 2 walks. Hopefully he'll be ready for Salem soon.

JOHANFRAN went 2-5.

JOHNFRANK went 2-5 with a double.

According to this, the Sea Dogs are starting Isaac Coffey on 3 days rest?

https://www.milb.com/gameday/sea-dogs-vs-fisher-cats/2023/07/03/725800#game_state=preview,lock_state=preview,game_tab=,game=725800

He pitched 6 scoreless innings on Thursday, 83 pitches.

Seems odd if true. He's had at least 5 days rest before every other start. Doesn't seem like they should be trying to line him up for a higher level or anything. He's only played 2 games at AA.

Found these highlights from his last start.

Salem won 5-3 & YORDANNY is now 2-0.

Caleb Bolden, 24, who was the Red Sox 7th round pick last year, pitched 2 scoreless innings for his 4th save, lowering his ERA to 3.34. He has 54 strikeouts in 35 innings.

Bolden, from Texarkana, TX attended TCU & was drafted to sign way under slot at $7,500.

Bear Claw at 51?? He's 33 with 274 major league innings, so he's not exactly a prospect. :D
He's thrown 11 effective innings for the Woo Sox, so he is a minor leaguer who could be pitching for the big club soon though. Looks like he is tentatively scheduled to start tonight according to the Woo Sox site:
https://www.milb.com/worcester

I wonder if he has a couple good innings if they will take him out early to keep him available for a possible weekend promotion.

Lol people whose names I put in ALL CAPS get bumped up the list irrationally. I don't make the rules.

It's an interesting point, though. I was thinking about whether to do people like Sterling Sharp/Lamet/Palka etc. because this is a Minor Leagues thread & not a prospects thread per se, & if BEAR CLAW is going to help the Major League team more than other people on the list, why does it matter that he's old?

But no, he does not really belong on an actual prospects list.

Obed Balderas started for DSL Blue. Pretty cool name.

Balderas turns 17 in 2 weeks. He is from Monterrey, Mexico & signed as an IFA for $20k this January.

Obed had a 2.03 ERA coming into the game in 13.1 IP. He pitched a scoreless 1st, allowing 2 hits & recording a strikeout. Then the game got suspended due to lightning.

Going to shout out Yonfi Rodriguez just because I think his name is pretty cool.

YONFI pitched 2 innings, allowing 1 hit, 1 unearned run, & striking out 3. He lowered his ERA to 3.38.

YONFI turns 21 in exactly a month & is from Santa Domingo, DR. He signed for $10k in July '21.
YONFI making a bid for the top 100 with 1.2 no hit innings, allowing 1 walk for the FCL Sox today.

ERA down to 2.79.

Small shoutout to Matt Litwicki who pitched the last inning for the FCL Sox today.

Due to Tommy John surgery during the 2018 season & then back & shoulder injuries, Litwicki pitched a total of 31.1 innings over 3 years at the University of Indiana.

Litwicki was drafted by the Red Sox in the 10th round in '21 & received a $47,500 signing bonus. He then proceeded to have setbacks film his previous injuries & missed all of '22 & the beginning of '23.

However... the 24 y/o is finally back! He's a fastball/slider pitcher who was previously throwing up to 99.

Today was his 3rd game back & after today's scoreless inning he has allowed 1 ER in 3 IP & recorded his 1st professional strikeout today.

I think Bear Claw on the list is kind of funny, and he is a minor leaguer who is a candidate to pitch in the majors this year.
I'm going to see him pitch tonight for the Woo Sox.

Jennings in the Athletic has his June prospects report:

https://theathletic.com/4663497/2023/07/04/red-sox-june-all-minors-team/
JohanFran was his catcher of the month.

Other catcher updates:
In his first full month in Double A, Hickey had a .271/.379/.521 slash line. … With Jorge Alfaro released and Caleb Hamilton promoted, playing time has opened up behind the plate in Worcester, and Stephen Scott (.892 OPS) and Ronaldo Hernández (.953 OPS) filled it with a lot of offense last month. … Alex Erro (.957 OPS) and Ronald Rosario (.853 OPS) are each putting up numbers while splitting time at catcher in Greenville. Ninth-rounder Brooks Bannon led the FCL team with three homers in June, then he hit another on July 1.
Other interesting comments:
Signed for a small IFA bonus in January, 17-year-old 1B Andruw Musett hit .327 with 11 walks and only five strikeouts while catching and playing first base in the Dominican Summer League.
After missing two weeks with a hamstring injury, Brainer Bonaci picked up right where he left off and had a 1.034 OPS in his first 10 games back.
Since joining Double-A Portland in early May, Chase Meidroth has been basically a full-time third baseman and he’s continued to be one of the best hitters in the system, including a .286/.425/.471 slash line last month. He’s doing that in Double A less than a year out of college.
Not to be confused with catcher Johanfran Garcia, FCL third baseman Johnfrank Salazar delivered the team’s second-best OPS in June (.954) while also getting a couple of starts behind the plate.

Yoeilin Cespedes and Franklin Arias:
Both 17 years old, Dominican Summer League. In June: .958 and 1.017 OPS
Signed in January, these were two of the biggest names in the Red Sox’s international class. Cespedes was the biggest name (he signed for more than $1 million), and assistant GM Eddie Romero called him one of the most advanced IFA hitters the Red Sox had signed in nearly 20 years. Cespedes delivered on that promise in his first taste of pro ball with a .355/.380/.579 slash line last month. Arias was more highly touted for his glove but had a .426/.493/.525 slash line with more walks (7) than strikeouts (6) for the month. Both Cespedes and Arias have played nothing but shortstop in the field, so it’s a good thing the Red Sox have two DSL teams.
Cedanne is on:
From May 25 to June 24, Rafaela had a .973 OPS with at least one hit in 23 of his last 25 games in Portland. Still not a lot of walks, but his strikeouts were down, and the Red Sox moved him up. Since getting to Triple A on June 29, Rafaela’s been playing mostly shortstop instead of center field, but that might be a product of Worcester being extremely short-handed with three different infielders on the IL.
The Wikelman is looking good:
After a brutal month of April (opponents literally had a .500 OBP against him), Gonzalez was much better in May and terrific in June. A scout last month compared his raw stuff to that of Brayan Bello at a similar stage of development. His last three starts of the month: 15 2/3 innings, 27 strikeouts, 1 run.
Other starters:
32nd-round pick Bradley Blalock missed all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he returned at the end of May, made four good starts in Low A (1.50 ERA), got promoted to High-A Greenville and on June 29 went six innings with one run at the higher level. He had a 2.66 ERA for the month. … Another really nice month for Portland’s Brian Van Belle who won all four of his starts while going six innings each time. He had a 1.50 ERA for the month.
In addition to Luis Guerrero and Ryan Fernandez, other relievers of note include Scritti Politi and Jonathan Brand:
The system’s leader in games pitched last month, Worcester’s AJ Politi had a stretch of seven straight scoreless outings and finished with two walks and a 2.31 ERA for the month. … Last year’s eighth-round pick, Jonathan Brand, didn’t allow an earned run in Low-A Salem last month. He gave up just three walks and three hits in six outings.
