9 of the 12 hits Anthony got with Portland in September came in 3 games. How many came on pitchers who were called up from a lower level to replace pitchers called up to the majors? He may well turn out to be a good player but I think it is a little early to predict stardom based on his AA stats.

Are we also discounting all his A+ hits?

5 pitchers got shelled today. The 1st 2 have been in AA all season, 1 has played 13 games in AA, the 4th guy has played 17 games in AA & had a rehab stint in the FCL & the 5th has been in AA all year.

They are 26, 27, 25, 25 & 25. Roman is 19.

Your stat is also wrong. He has 2 3-hit games, 1 2-hit game & 4 1-hit games in 10 games - so 8 in 3 games.

His 2 hits on the 14th were against a 23 y/o making his 8th start in AA & a 21 y/o making his 4th appearance.

On the 9th he had 3 hits, 2 against a 25 y/o who has been in AA all year except a few games in AAA, & one against a 24 y/o who started the season in A+ but has played 24 games in AA.

But of course it's a tiny sample size of 43 PAs. An encouraging start, though.

12-35 with 4 doubles & 1 homer, 3 steals, 8 walks, 6 strikeouts.

Slashing .343/.477/.543 with a 1.020 OPS.

If you want a larger sample size here are his stats in Greenville where he was the youngest player in the league most of the time...

244 PAs slashing. 294/.412/.569, .981 OPS.

He had a 164 wRC+ in both A+ & AA.

& he plays really good defense in CF & doesn't turn 20 until May. It's a pretty tantalizing set of skills & early results.

Have you given any thought to moving him to #1?
Lots. I think Mayer #1 is still right because of the SS factor & because his AA struggles can be attributed to injury... but if Anthony comes out raking next year & Mayer doesn't, it's definitely in play.

You're right. I scrolled down on his game log in September when I counted his hits but scrolled up when checking for three-hit games and forgot he was playing for Greenville on September 1 and 2.

Oh no the Tyler Voltron is breaking up
Maybe they'll reassemble in Worcester. It lasted as long as it could.

Kind of an odd choice for a call up, but I guess they like the flexibility & he has been hitting better lately.

TMac was also in Worcester earlier this year for a bit (0-3).

Let's see if I can bring receipts on this "hitting better" thing.

Since August 17th he has hit 21-62 with 1 double & 3 triples, 10 walks & 21 strikeouts.

.339/.431/.452, .883 OPS.

Of course, he's also striking out 33.9% of the time & I'm pretty sure a .512 BABIP isn't sustainable.

Manchester, N.H.
Might not be the right thread for it but also didn't feel like it was worth starting one. Keith Law took in some Portland games.

Law’s minor-league scouting: Red Sox got a steal with Roman Anthony’s beautiful swing - The Athletic

Not breaking paywall entirely, but he really likes Roman Anthony "maybe the best swing in the minors", he saw "several swings that were picture perfect", and he's going to be higher than the #45 Law had him midseason on his next rankings. Other guys

  • Wikelman has a big league level fastball but command and secondary pitch issues might relegate him to the pen (he did see Gonzalez on a rainy night so, might just be that too).
  • He's not a fan of Yorke's inbetween of contact and power swings and thinks this year's output (260-350-437) is a reasonable expectation for what he'll do in the majors - thinks there's potential for a better average hitter if he focuses on that
    • IMO if Yorke can be a high-700s OPS MI with that line he'll have a nice role in Boston...
  • He thinks Blaze Jordan's lack of defensive profiling outside of 1B/DH and bat speed issues will prevent him from profiling in that spot in the bigs.

Stuff like that is probably best in the Prospect Discussion Thread, but I'm not really sure what anyone really consumes & I tend to just dump everything I find in the daily threads.
