Social promotion…
Had to Google this phrase. Not sure how I've gotten through life without being familiar with it. Probably about right.

I guess they could also use a new utility man with Dalbec called up. In Portland this year...

SS - 24 games (22 starts)
RF - 15 games (15 starts)
2B - 14 games (13 starts)

Impressed that the Drive have been able to turn it on in the playoffs after being swept (0-6) by Aberdeen the last week of the regular season.
I guess they were lining up the pitching!
Yeah, their hitting definitely hasn't been great in these 3 games, but Penrod, Yordanny & Perales have been pretty lights out.

I understand that the more qualifiers you add, the less of an output you will get, but those numbers are really, really impressive.
Yup... it's kind of an elimination by force, but they are still nice #s.

I was going to ask what the point of activating Mayer was, but then I realized the season was over so what would be the point not to?

09/18/23 Portland Sea Dogs activated RHP Taylor Broadway from the 7-day injured list.
09/18/23 Portland Sea Dogs activated SS Marcelo Mayer from the 7-day injured list.

In honor of SoxProspects 20th anniversary...let's look at their 2024 Projected Rosters:

Red Sox 1st...

Rotation
SP Acquisition
SP Acquisition
RH Brayan Bello
LH Chris Sale
RH Kutter Crawford
LH James Paxton

Not a lot of faith in the current crop. Paxton would have to come pretty cheap to want to bring him back as the 6th starter I would think.

Bullpen
RH Kenley Jansen
RH Chris Martin
RH Josh Winckowski
RH Tanner Houck
RH Garrett Whitlock
RH Nick Pivetta
RH John Schreiber
LH Chris Murphy
LH Brennan Bernardino

I wouldn't mind trading Kenley if someone wants to give something of worth for him. By all accounts a good guy, though, & fine to have around. Just kind of overpaid for his current level of production.

Inactive Pitchers
RH
LH Joely Rodríguez
RH Mauricio Llovera
RH Justin Garza
RH Kaleb Ort
RH Kyle Barraclough
RH Logan Gillaspie
RH Zack Weiss

Glossing over the Red Sox stuff because it's neither particularly interesting, or the point of the thread.

On to the more interesting stuff, starting with Worcester:

Rotation/Piggyback
LH Brandon Walter
LH Shane Drohan
RH Grant Gambrell
RH Brian Van Belle
RH Justin Hagenman

4 of those guys they have are repeating, & Hagenman they have been stretching out. So it makes sense. I wonder if all those guys will survive the R5. Walter is already on the 40 (& probably shouldn't be), & the other 4 are all eligible this year

LH Joe Jacques
RH Nick Robertson
RH Luis Guerrero
RH AJ Politi
RH
RH Ryan Zeferjahn
RP Acquisition
RP Acquisition
RP Acquisition

Inactive Pitchers
RH Chase Shugart
RH

Of those guys, the 1st 3 are already on the 40, Guerrero isn't & doesn't need to be until next year, but could be ready to contribute.

Red Sox Stats is also optimistic about Nick Robertson, & he does have good stuff.

Politi, Fernandez & Zeferjahn are all Rule 5 Eligible & all interesting in their own ways. Fernandez probably the most interesting.

Lineup
C Stephen Scott
1B Niko Kavadas
2B Nick Yorke
3B Chase Meidroth
SS David Hamilton
LF Corey Rosier
CF Wilyer Abreu
RF Bobby Dalbec
DH Enmanuel Valdez

Bench
C Acquisition
C Elih Marrero
IF Christian Koss
UT Ryan Fitzgerald
UT Nick Sogard
UT Tyler McDonough

This is pretty interesting. They see Ronaldo Hernandez moving on, Abreu back in AAA, & promotions for Yorke, Meidroth & Marrero. The thing that would surprise me most would be Dalbec actually returning for another season in Worcester next year. It's time for both sides to move on & get a fresh start. Hopefully he does great in his end of the season audition & increases his value.

Dalbec, Hamilton, Abreu & Valdez are all on the 40. The only real guy of note who could be taken in Rule 5 if not added is Stephen Scott. A guy like Sogard would probably be able to be a competent bench utility player in MLB for a small market team, but I couldn't imagine them adding him to the 40 to prevent that.

I wouldn't mind if they moved on from Hamilton, too. His speed is fun, but hopefully they can get some far away flyers for him or include him in a bigger deal. I just don't really see a serious role for him & think he's another AAAA player like Dalbec & Walter (except Walter isn't even a particularly good AAA pitcher).

Forgot to put the "Inactive Hitters" which is just a weird category:

Inactive Hitters
C Oscar Rangel
C Matt Donlan

Donlan was demoted from AA to A+, so would expect him to be inactive at a lower level next year. & idk how many years in a row Rangel can be inactive?

On to Portland's Rotation:

Rotation
RH
RH Hunter Dobbins
RH
RH Isaac Coffey
LH Zach Penrod
RH Noah Song

They don't see any promotions from the previous group - just the removal of Sharp & Liu to be replaced by Penrod & Song. Makes sense on both accounts I think. Penrod & Song are both 26, so seeing what they can do at Portland next year makes more sense than keeping them at Greenville.

Wikelman will need to be added to the 40, & Bastardo almost certainly will not be, but hopefully sticks around. Song is also going to be R5 eligible again, but I don't think anyone would do that to him?

Bullpen
RH CJ Liu
RH Alex Hoppe
RH Christopher Troye
RH Theo Denlinger
RH
RH Jacob Webb
RH Brock Bell
RH Ryan Miller
RH
RH Wyatt Olds

The bullpen mix doesn't seem too different from this year, with Liu getting demoted from starter & promotions for Brock Bell & Jordan DiValerio. I get that DiValerio is about to turn 26, but he just hasn't been good at Greenville - 5.08 ERA/4.90 xFIP in his 2nd full season at the level. It's time to get more interesting arms in the system & move on from guys like him.

I'd say the same for Ryan Miller, who is 27, but he at least strikes out a fair amount of guys & this was his 1st year in the system, so I don't mind him sticking around. I also think he got better toward the end of the season. Let's double check...

In his last 4 games, he pitched 7 scoreless innings, 3 hits, 2 walks & 9 strikeouts.

In his last 17 games:

23.1 IP
7 ER
22 hits
7 walks
2 hbp
33 strikeouts

2.70 ERA, 1.24 WHIP (compared to a 4.03 ERA & 1.36 WHIP on the season).

So he can keep his job. The rest are fine. Broadway was injured a lot of this year. One would expect Troye & Hoppe to AAA at some point next season, but probably fine to start in AA.

Inactive Pitchers
RH Robert Kwiatkowski
RH Joey Stock
RH
RH Maceo Campbell
RH Nate Tellier
RH Dylan Spacke
LH Brendan Cellucci
RH Cody Scroggins
RH Casey Cobb
LH Jorge Rodriguez

The Kwiat Assassin, Stock, Tellier & Cobb are all mediocre older A+ pitchers. Campbell, too, although he's at least interesting because he throws very hard & is just ridiculously wild. Pretty sure they were all 2020 UDFAs & for the most part should be getting phased out, not moved to the AA inactive list.

Padron-Artiles & Rodriguez both missed the entire year with injury I believe.

Scroggins has actually been good the last couple weeks since returning from injury, Cellucci has pitched well since the All-Star Break, & Spacke (another '20 UDFA guy) has been ok.

They have promotions to AA for Paulino, Miller, Gonzalez & Ferguson. No real objections. They have the guys who were depth pieces in A+ moving up to the AA inactive list. Bonaci & Paulino are R5 eligible.

RH
RH Reidis Sena
RH Jose Ramirez
RH Luis De La Rosa
LH Jeremy Wu-Yelland
RH Jonathan Brand
LH Nathan Landry
LH Noah Dean
RH Blake Wehunt
RH Trennor O'Donnell

They have JDE staying in his new bullpen role. Wu-Yelland pitched 4 innings since 2021 (this year in FCL), when he was in Greenville, so seems like a fine place to put him to start. Promotions and moved from the rotation for Ramirez & Dean (although they already started using openers for Dean in Salem), as well as for Brand & De La Rosa who are both interesting arms & ready to move up imo, & Wehunt/O'Donnell? Sure, why not. Wehunt pitched 1 inning this year, O'Donnell 0.

The only holdovers are Cepeda, Sena & Landry, who missed most of the season. It makes sense to move out a lot of the org filler that was chilling in Greenville this season.

Inactive Pitchers
RH Caleb Bolden
RH Nathanael Cruz
RH Gabriel Jackson
RH Jaret Godman
RH Railin Perez
RH Luis Talavera

These guys are all fine pitchers, too. Godman pitched 7.2 innings in Greenville before going down early in the year. Bolden & Jackson were promoted to Greenville not too long ago, & they are projecting new promotions for Cruz, Perez & Talavera...although being promoted to an inactive list isn't a very exciting promotion.

Salem...

Rotation
LH Connelly Early
LH Hayden Mullins
RH Elvis Soto
RH Yizreel Burnet
RH Francis Hernandez

Fun little crew. Burnet has pitched a total of 25 innings over the past 3 years, including 1 in the FCL this year, but he seemed talented in limited exposure & is 19. But they may keep back some of those guys they have as extras in Greenville. But I would enjoy all 5 of those guys getting a chance. Elvis is the only 1 of the 5 in the rotation for Salem this year. Mullins recently started opening some games after recovering from injury, but will hopefully be more stretched out this year. I was calling for Hernandez (along with Cohen, Colmenares & Van Der Schaaf to get some run in A-Ball this year after the FCL season ended).

LF Caden Rose
CF Miguel Bleis

DH Jhostynxon Garcia

The only real promotion from FCL here is Armando Sierra. All the other guys have been there since at least the end of this season, except Caden Rose, who was a '23 draft pick. I would personally like to see Bleis start next season at Greenville, but I get that might not happen...that reminds me, though...I totally skipped Greenville's lineup. My bad. Will do the Salem bench, & then get on that.
